On the banks of the Cherni Osam near Oreshak stands the Troyan Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God. It is considered the largest monastery in the Balkan Mountains and Bulgaria’s third-largest spiritual center. The monastery church has frescoes by Zahari Zograf dating from the Bulgarian National Revival. In Troyan Municipality, these examples of ecclesiastical art sit alongside a strong craft tradition and trails into the mountain landscape.

River landscapes and historic routes

About 80 percent of Troyan Municipality lies within the Osam River basin. The municipal area also extends into the basins of the Yantra and Vit rivers. Most of the Sopot Reservoir is also within the municipality. These geographical features show that Troyan encompasses more than one river basin.

The ancient Via Trayana, which connected Lower Moesia with Thrace, runs through the municipality. Sostra was the sixth road station along this route. There is an improved road and a parking lot beside the Roman fortress of Sostra. As this infrastructure may change, check the situation before setting out.

Monastery art and ceramics

The monastery near Oreshak offers a particularly tangible link between place and art history: its church has frescoes by Zahari Zograf dating from the Bulgarian National Revival. The monastery is described as the largest in the Balkan Mountains and Bulgaria’s third-largest spiritual center.

The Museum of Folk Arts and Applied Arts in Troyan focuses on both the objects and how they are made and used. It displays crafts, tools and forms, as well as examples of their uses and various decorative techniques. Local ceramics have a special focus: the museum traces their development from the Ceramic Neolithic through the Bulgarian National Revival, as well as the development of the Troyan School of Ceramics. Visits to a pottery workshop and demonstrations of icon painting and woodcarving are also offered. Check before your trip whether these activities are available on your visit date.

The National Exhibition of Arts and Crafts in Oreshak showcases folk art objects made by recognized master craftspeople from all the ethnographic regions of Bulgaria. Visitors can try regional crafts such as pottery, woodcarving, pyrography and weaving. Schedules may change; check in advance when hands-on activities are taking place.

Warm mineral springs are another feature of the municipality: there are springs in Shipkovo and Chiflik. Chiflik has several warm mineral springs, with temperatures of up to 55°C.

Hiking trails for different ability levels

Several trails lead from Chiflik into Central Balkan National Park and the Kozya Stena Reserve. One route starts with a 3.5 km stretch of asphalt road to the Haydushka Pesenn hut. A marked hiking trail then leads to the Kozya Stena hut in 2 hours and 30 minutes. In winter, be aware of avalanche-prone zones along the route; check current conditions.

A mountain route runs from the Smesite area near Cherni Osam to the Ambaritsa hut. The route is listed as taking 3 hours and requires good mountaineering preparation. The panoramic hiking trail takes a different course: it leads from the National Exhibition of Arts and Crafts in Oreshak through the Sadina area to the Natural History Museum and the mountain guide school in Cherni Osam. Along the way, it passes through a mixed beech forest. As trail conditions can change, check the latest information before hiking.

A festival featuring regional cuisine

The “Chukan Bob s Kopriva i Horo se Izviva” festival takes place annually in Cherni Osam. It combines the regional dish of beans and nettles with music and dancing. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the dates and program in advance.
