Kaleytsa brings together literary culture and a rich history passed down through generations. This gives you several things to consider when planning your trip: Which cultural events are associated with the town, what role did traditional occupations play, and which historic or scenic places are nearby? The Lamar House represents the town’s literary connection; Kaleto is home to a fortress and the route through what is now Troyan Pass. Lopushnitsa Waterfall adds a natural attraction to these themes.

Literary culture at the Lamar House

The Lamar House is a literary and cultural venue. It hosts summer literary gatherings, readings for Bulgarian Enlighteners Day, and an annual event celebrating the poet Lamar’s birthday. These events follow different schedules: the gatherings take place in summer, the readings are tied to a specific commemorative day, and the birthday celebration is an annual occasion. If culture plays a role in choosing when to travel, check the specific event dates in advance.

Crafts and livelihoods

Traditional livelihoods in Kaleytsa included pottery, woodworking, leatherworking, trade and livestock farming. The town’s history thus spans crafts, exchange and animal husbandry, encompassing more than a single art form. This variety of occupations lends the historical perspective an everyday dimension: alongside the literary culture of the Lamar House were work, trade and the different skills that sustained life in the town across generations. For travelers interested in culture beyond events, this background offers another way to explore Kaleytsa’s history.

Kaleto and Troyan Pass

The Kaleto area and its fortress are about 2 km from Kaleytsa. The site is associated with protecting the route through what is now Troyan Pass and with the local Thracian population. The fortress is considered to have been in use since the first millennium BC.

About Lopushnitsa Waterfall

Lopushnitsa Waterfall, also called Skoka, is about 2 km west of Kaleytsa. The described route continues by car for about 2 km beyond the village; after that, it takes about ten minutes to walk along the river. The waterfall is around 10 m high and has a pool at its base. When planning your visit, it is helpful to account separately for the drive and the walk: the roughly ten minutes refers to the walk along the river, not the entire journey. Check local conditions before setting out, as part of the route follows the river on foot.

Both destinations are about two kilometres from Kaleytsa; the waterfall is west of the town. For Skoka, the directions include a specific sequence of driving and walking, while Kaleto is distinguished primarily by its fortress and the history of the pass.
