Kavarna: Discover the Coast, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Kavarna
At Bolata, a steep path leads north to the top of the cliff; from there, the view stretches across the gorge. Bolata is the only sandy beach in the Kaliakra area. The Municipality of Kavarna also offers an extensive coastline, natural areas, archaeological sites and cultural attractions. This lets you tailor your trip to different interests.
Coast and Natural Areas
The Municipality of Kavarna has a 42-kilometre coastline. Its beaches cover a total area of 74,000 square metres. Bolata adds a special feature: it is the only sandy beach in the Kaliakra area. The steep path to the viewpoint overlooking the gorge is another distinctive feature of the place. If you plan to take in this view, bear the path conditions in mind.
Taukliman is linked to the Via Pontica migratory bird route. Every spring, flocks of thousands of gulls, geese, waders, plovers and other birds stop there. The Goliamata Maara, Temnata Dupka, Aragonite and Iglenoto Uho caves are also located in Taukliman. The area thus brings together two distinct landscape features: seasonal bird migration and caves.
Yaylata is also notable for its wildlife: More than 178 bird species nest there or migrate towards the African coast to spend the winter. More than 270 animal species have also been recorded there. The seasonal picture differs from Taukliman: flocks of birds stop there every spring, while the description of Yaylata encompasses both nesting birds and birds migrating to their wintering grounds.
Archaeology and History
Yaylata includes a cave settlement with 101 dwellings, inhabited as early as the 5th millennium BC. Its archaeological landscape also includes an early Byzantine fortress and five ancient necropolises. When planning your trip, you can therefore explore Yaylata both for its early settlement history and its natural features.
At Cape Chirakman, there is a restored fortress wall of interest to tourists. A basilica from the same period has also been excavated there. In Kavarna itself are the Church of Saint George, built in 1836, and the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, built in 1860. The two dates mark different construction periods and give the churches their own place in the area’s historical landscape.
The Ethnographic Complex of Kavarna includes a house museum, a restored shoemaker’s workshop, a lace workshop and a courtyard. It presents the distinctive cultural characteristics of the Dobrudzhan, Gagauz and Kotlenzi communities. The complex’s various elements offer different ways to explore it, from the house museum and traditional crafts to the shared courtyard.
At Cape Kaliakra, the cave museum displays archaeological finds from excavations in the reserve as well as a model of the ancient fortress. During the active tourist season, guided tours or explanations by a guide are available. If you plan to take advantage of these, check the seasonal information in advance.
Festivals and Activities
The traditional Mussel and Fish Festival is organized by the Municipality of Kavarna. In August 2026, it was held for the 23rd time. This edition featured public cooking demonstrations and tastings of mussels, Black Sea fish and other seafood. The Kavarna Rock Fest began in 2006, adding a festival with its own history alongside the event celebrating local food.
Near Kamen Bryag, there are challenging, hard-to-access climbing routes used by sport climbers. The Ogancheto near Kamen Bryag is a gas flame issuing from a metal pipe and is said to burn continuously. These features differ markedly from the cultural and natural sites: the focus here is on climbing and a striking landscape feature.
Whether you prioritize bird migration, archaeology, churches, crafts, festivals or climbing on your trip, Kavarna offers a range of distinct themes. The places and experiences mentioned here give you a starting point for planning your trip around your own priorities.
