Viktorsberg: Monastery History and Hiking Trails

Viktorsberg offers two starting points for planning your trip: hikes with named waypoints and the former monastery’s current use as a seminar, event and cultural centre. Hiking: Destination or Starting Point

Min Weag 27 runs from Laterns via the Alpwegkopf Panorama Trail to Viktorsberg. The hike is moderately difficult, 14.01 kilometres long and takes 5.5 hours. This makes it a substantial, standalone activity in your itinerary; the moderate difficulty rating adds a difficulty category to the time and distance details. The route offers mountain views of Schesaplana, Wildberg, Panüeler, the Drei Schwestern and the Swiss mountains. How far you can see depends on the weather. Min Weag 28 offers a different focus: this two-summit hike follows ridgelines and offers a 360° panorama from Hohe Kugel.

The ninth stage of the Walser Trail runs from Viktorsberg to Ebnit and starts at Viktorsberg Monastery Church. Unlike Min Weag 27, which ends here, this stage makes Viktorsberg its starting point. This is a concrete difference to consider when planning your trip: on one route, the village is the destination; on the other, it is the start of a stage.

Monastery History and Present-Day Use

Viktorsberg Monastery was founded in 1384 by Count Rudolf V of Montfort-Feldkirch as a Franciscan Minorite monastery. The Minorite monastery was dissolved in 1785. These two dates mark its founding and the end of its former monastic role; the founder’s name and the order it belonged to place its history in a specific historical and institutional context.

Today, the former Viktorsberg Monastery is a seminar, event and cultural centre welcoming many visitors from Austria and abroad. The monastery’s former role and its present-day use belong to different periods in the village’s history.
