Discover Schnifis
Accommodation in Schnifis
Schnifis lies on sun-drenched slopes in the hills of the Walgau and is surrounded by beech and fir forests. The trails offer a variety of experiences: routes lead from the Hensler mountain station towards Hochgerach and Walserkamm, while others explore local legends and forest knowledge. Historical and religious landmarks can be found in the town centre and along the path to Alpe Gampelin.
Walgau landscapes and hiking trails
From the Hensler mountain station, routes lead to Hochgerach and Walserkamm. The Legends Trail starts at the cable car mountain station. The Vorarlberg Way of St James: Bludenz–Rankweil leads from the “Jordan” junction through forests and meadows to Schnifis. If you prefer to navigate by named destinations, you can explore the routes towards Hochgerach and Walserkamm; the Way of St James is described as running through forests and meadows.
The Laurentius Trail in Schnifis has ten stations with benches where you can scan a code to listen to audio samples about Laurentius of SchnĂĽffis. The Forest Knowledge Trail provides information about the functions and benefits of forests, sustainable management and climate-resilient tree species. The trails range from audio samples about a named person to factual information about forests and tree species.
Church and chapel
The parish church of St John the Baptist is in the town centre. It was rebuilt in 1972/73; only the old tower with its gabled pointed helmet roof was retained. The preserved tower therefore contrasts with the newly built church.
On the way to Alpe Gampelin, you’ll find the Alte Bild, a small chapel with a votive painting dating from 1704. While the church, with its renovation and preserved tower, tells a story of the town centre’s architecture, the dated votive painting awaits you on the path to the alp.
A regional product
At the Schnifis dairy, Vorarlberg mountain cheese PDO is made from raw milk produced without silage, from cows in the Dreiklang region. The product details specify both the type of milk and the cows’ origin. Alongside the landscape and culture, this local product provides another tangible link to Schnifis.
Winter hiking and paragliding
The winter hiking trail runs from the Winkel car park in DĂĽnserberg via the Naturfreunde-Gerachhaus to the mountain station of the Schnifis cable car at Hensler. When winter conditions are suitable, the trail is groomed and is easy to walk without snowshoes. Grooming is therefore dependent on suitable winter conditions.
Paragliders can enjoy ideal training conditions at Schnifisberg all year round. Before taking part, check the flying conditions and local operating rules. The seasonal grooming of the winter hiking trail and the year-round training conditions described at Schnifisberg therefore differ in their time frame.
Getting here by bus
