Mittelberg: Walmendingerhorn and Walser Cultural Trail
Accommodation in Mittelberg
Mittelberg combines winter activities, mountain trails, and places of cultural and historical interest. These include the parish church of St. Jodok and the Walser Cultural Trail. The offerings vary depending on the season and the type of experience. The destination therefore offers options for winter days as well as opportunities to explore hiking trails and local history.
Walmendingerhorn: slopes and summit views
In winter, Walmendingerhorn offers 15 kilometers of ski slopes for beginners and advanced skiers. This makes it a clear focus for skiing on the mountain when planning your trip. A well-maintained hiking trail also leads to the summit; the final stretch is 50 meters in elevation. From the top, views extend toward the Allgäu and Hoher Ifen, as well as toward the Widderstein in the Kleinwalsertal. The slopes and summit trail offer different ways to experience Walmendingerhorn: winter skiing or a hike with views in several directions.
Church and chapel as historic sites
The parish church of St. Jodok has shaped local history through several phases of construction. Its old bell tower dates back to the 14th century. After an avalanche, the church was renovated and given a Baroque style in 1693; it was restored in 1963. These dates mark different stages in the building’s history. The Lourdes Chapel is located directly behind the parish church. It was built in 1897 as a foundation by master builder Friedrich Mathies. The two religious buildings, each with its own history, therefore stand close together.
Walser Cultural Trail
The Walser Cultural Trail broadens the focus from individual buildings to cultural and historical sites. Information boards are located at the buildings and stops; an audio guide is also available at each stop via Outdooractive. You can explore the stops using both the boards and the audio guide. Unlike the individual buildings of St. Jodok and the Lourdes Chapel, the Cultural Trail takes you to several buildings and cultural and historical sites, with information available on-site. It offers a distinct focus for travelers interested in local history.
Winter activities and local connections
The Steinbock cross-country ski trail is 14 kilometers long and runs from the entrance to Mittelberg via Bödmen to Baad and into the Derratal valley. Alongside downhill skiing, cross-country skiing is another activity in its own right. Mittelberg also has several toboggan runs. Winter visitors can therefore choose between different activities, including skiing, cross-country skiing, and tobogganing. The number of ski kilometers describes the offering at Walmendingerhorn; the cross-country ski trail, by contrast, is a specific route from the entrance to Mittelberg to the Derratal valley.
The other districts of the Kleinwalsertal are easily reached from Mittelberg; other mountain lifts and hiking destinations are also convenient to reach by Walserbus or lift. If you want to include several destinations in your trip, these connections may factor into your choice of where to stay.
