Fußach: Rhine Delta, Trails and History
Accommodation in Fußach
Fußach offers several distinct starting points for a stay: the protected Rhine Delta, trails through the landscape, activities at Rohrspitz and local history. If you are looking for a hotel in Fußach, you can choose your destination based on whether nature watching, a specific route, swimming or local history should shape your stay.
Rhine Delta and birdlife
The Rhine Delta was placed under protection by regulation in 1976 and provides a habitat for a diverse range of plant and animal life. The nature reserve is home to more than 330 bird species and is also an important breeding and resting site for birds. For travelers interested in nature and birdlife, this is a distinctive highlight. The nature reserve also has numerous walking and cycling trails.
Loop trail at the mouth of the Rhine
The “Lagoon Loop Trail at the Mouth of the Rhine” starts and ends at “In der Schanz” in Fußach. It passes the old riverbed, known as “Eselschwanz,” an amphibian habitat, colorful waterside meadows and the old Rhine embankment. From the top of the embankment, the trail offers views across the Upper Lake and of the island town of Lindau. This named route brings together small-scale landscape features along the way and wide-ranging views across the lake.
Rohrspitz: swimming and water sports
Swimming in Lake Constance is the main attraction at Rohrspitz. Rohrspitz is a swimming area in the Rhine Delta with a sandy beach; you can cycle there and then swim in Lake Constance. Swimming is available seasonally. Rohrspitz also has a harbor and a water-skiing and wakeboarding school. Operators and seasonal availability may change, so check current availability before making plans.
Cycling through the Rhine Delta
Another option is the easy “Cycle Tour from Bregenz through the Rhine Delta.” It follows the shores of Lake Constance via Hard and Fußach into the Rhine Delta and runs mostly on flat cycle paths. The route also includes sections with road traffic and a few intersections. Both the flat terrain and the traffic sections are relevant to the route, so take both into account when planning. The two routes can be compared by their reference points: the Lagoon Loop Trail starts and ends at “In der Schanz,” while the cycle tour from Bregenz passes through Hard and Fußach on its way into the Rhine Delta.
The history of Fußach
In the Middle Ages, Fußach was one of the most important goods transshipment points in the Lake Constance region. The historic warehouse “Zuschg” on Ferdinand-Weiß-Straße was built in 1795 for transshipping goods. St. Nicholas Parish Church also reflects several historical periods: it was rebuilt in 1977–1979, with its old 17th-century bell tower incorporated into the new building. The “Burghügel” (Castle Hill) is a reminder of Fußach Castle, which was completely demolished in 1799.
