Egg: Culture, Routes and Swimming Experiences
Accommodation in Egg
If you are looking for a hotel in Egg, you can plan your days around local themes: a museum visit, routes with bridges, cycling or seasonal swimming. Specific differences can help you choose: historical content and exhibition programmes, route details and seasonal operating conditions.
Museum, Local History and Remembrance
The Egg Museum was founded as a local history museum in 1904 and reopened in 1988 after its collections had been in storage for several years. It reopened in the former school and municipal building dating from 1899.
The museum presents one or two exhibitions each year relating to the Bregenzerwald. It offers guided tours of the exhibitions, special accompanying programmes and dedicated children’s programmes. As the programme may change, check in advance which offers are available for your visit. If you are travelling with children, you can ask specifically about the current children’s programme.
Elias BrĂĽgel is a memorial to people who died during the leprosy epidemic. This memorial site has a different historical focus from the exhibition themes and the history of the buildings around Egg Church: its focus is remembering the deceased.
Routes with Bridges and Cycling Routes
The “Egg in the Time of the Felders” route brings to life what happened to important buildings around Egg Church more than 100 years ago. A backpack with useful materials and audio recordings enhances the experience. Its focus is therefore on the history of the buildings; you can see the route as a distinct perspective alongside the museum’s exhibition programme.
The “Floating above the Subersach” circular route crosses the Drahtsteg, a suspension bridge, as well as the old covered wooden bridge in Gschwendtobel. Two different types of bridge are therefore part of the same loop. The covered wooden bridge in Gschwendtobel, built in 1833, is attributed to Alois Negrelli. Check trail and bridge conditions on site.
The Egg–Schoppernau walking and cycling path starts in Egg and is 30 km long. Check the current route conditions before setting out. Another cycling route, the Bregenzerwald Cycle Path, follows the former Wälderbahn railway line from Egg to Doren along the section through Achtal. This gives you different points of reference for planning: the starting point and length of the Egg–Schoppernau path, and the former railway route along the section through Achtal.
Swimming and Regional Insights
At the Obere Falz alpine pasture, you can watch alpine cheese being made live. If you plan to visit for this experience, ask in advance about possible times.
The Egg outdoor pool has a diving tower with 1- and 3-metre platforms, as well as a 50-metre slide. The Egg swimming pool has a separate children’s pool with a baby slide. As outdoor pool facilities are seasonal and operating arrangements may change, check the latest operating information before your visit.
Egg town centre can only be reached via bridges; bear this in mind if you are heading into the centre.
