Ottakring: Market, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Ottakring
Different interests may influence your choice of hotel location in Ottakring: culinary themes, cultural meeting places, historic buildings, or relaxation in the forest and on a hiking route. The specific examples range from the Brunnenmarkt and brewing culture to the Kuffner Observatory and Ottakring Forest. Which focus suits your stay depends on the themes you would like to make room for.
Market and Meeting Places
The Brunnenmarkt is a permanent street market specializing in retail goods, measuring 948 metres in length and featuring around 170 market stalls. Its offerings range from cafés and bars to Middle Eastern cuisine and regional food. This makes the market a culinary focal point combining dining and food shopping. Its offerings may change over time. If you have specific dishes or vendors in mind, it is best to check the current market selection in advance.
Yppenplatz is a meeting place and a venue for cultural encounters. Yppenplatz Park also has a themed playground designed in the style of fruit and market stalls. Its features include swings, climbing equipment, slides and sand play areas. Yppenplatz is thus described both as a cultural meeting place and in terms of the specific design of its park.
Brewing Culture and Historical Themes
Ottakringer Brewery is Vienna’s oldest brewery and has been dedicated to the craft of brewing since 1837. Brewery tours are offered year-round, from Monday to Saturday, in German and English. Public tours for individuals and small groups can be booked online; they end with a varied tasting of Ottakringer beers. Since schedules and booking arrangements may change, check current dates and booking options before making plans.
The Kuffner Observatory also brings together architectural and scientific history: it is an observatory dating from the Historicist period and houses a significant collection of astronomical instruments from the 19th century. Original winegrowers’ houses have been preserved on Ottakringer Straße, including those at numbers 222, 224 and 225. While the observatory draws attention to astronomy and instruments, the winegrowers’ houses represent another historic architectural style.
Relaxation, Hiking Trail and Orientation
Ottakring Forest recreation area covers 192 hectares. Today, it is primarily used for recreation and is also an important habitat for many wild forest animals. Nature and relaxation are two sides of the same area: the forest is a distinct focus when choosing where to stay, both as a place to unwind and because of its importance as a habitat.
Another activity is the City Hiking Trail 4a, which starts and ends at the Ottakring U3 station. Vienna’s U3 underground line runs from Ottakring in the west to Simmering in the east. This lets you identify the hiking route by its named starting and ending point, and consider the U3 by its west-to-east route. These are different points of reference: one for the city hiking trail, the other for the course of the underground line.
