Hietzing: Culture, History and Gardens
Accommodation in Hietzing
Hietzing offers several cultural themes for a stay: Gustav Klimt’s place of work and the history of the district. Schönbrunn Palace Park is also located in the wider travel destination of Vienna, in Vienna’s 13th district, Hietzing. When choosing a hotel, consider which of these highlights you would like to shape your stay. The Klimt Villa brings together preserved studio rooms and an exhibition, while the district museum presents archaeological finds and the district’s history. The palace park adds a plant collection, a Japanese garden and World Heritage status.
An additional entrance to the palace park
Since 25 August 2026, the Angel Gate on the Hietzing side has provided an additional entrance and exit to Schönbrunn Palace Park and the zoo. If you plan to visit either or both during your stay, you can include the Angel Gate as an additional access point in your plans. Check the latest information before your visit if access is important to your day’s plans.
Gustav Klimt’s place of work and preserved studio rooms
Gustav Klimt worked at the Klimt Villa from 1911 until his death in 1918. The studio rooms where he worked have been preserved. Both the rooms themselves and Klimt’s work are therefore at the heart of this site. The permanent exhibition about his studio offers a further perspective; it is the only one at a place where he formerly worked. The exhibition content may change.
The garden is another distinctive feature of the grounds: it is home to Damask roses planted around 1900. The Klimt Villa thus brings together a historic place of work, an exhibition and a planting that has been preserved over time. Those interested in art history can consider these as different ways of engaging with the site, rather than viewing the villa solely through a single exhibition.
Archaeological finds and district history
The Hietzing District Museum displays Palaeolithic finds that represent the oldest evidence to date of human life in the Vienna area. This classification refers to the Vienna area, making the finds a different historical point of reference from the history of the Klimt Villa. The museum also documents the district’s character as a “villa quarter”. Early human settlement and the district’s distinctive character are thus presented as separate themes.
Garden culture at Schönbrunn Palace Park
Schönbrunn Palace Park is located in Vienna’s 13th district, Hietzing. The Great Palm House displays special specimens from the historic plant collection in three houses: the warm house, the temperate house and the cold house. This layout offers a starting point for exploring the different parts of the collection and the culture of gardens and plant displays.
Another trace of history leads to the Japanese Garden in the palace park. Schönbrunn’s gardeners built it in 1913; it was rediscovered in 1996. These two dates mark different stages in its history: its creation and its later rediscovery. Since 1996, Schönbrunn Palace Park and Schönbrunn Palace have together been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Another perspective on architecture
The exhibition area of the Otto Wagner Pavilion in Hietzing is on the ground floor and comprises three rooms. For visitors finding their way around, the pavilion’s name is not the only relevant detail; its exhibition area is clearly defined too. It adds an architectural perspective to the art and garden themes.
The cultural sites have different focal points: the Klimt Villa centres on an artist and his preserved studio rooms; the district museum combines archaeological finds with district history; and the palace park’s grounds offer a perspective on the plant collection and garden history. If you are looking for a hotel in Hietzing, you can make your choice based on the themes that interest you most during your stay.
