Discover Liesing
Accommodation in Liesing
Liesing offers a blend of market activity at Liesinger Platz, paths along the Liesing, natural stretches of stream and architectural heritage. If you are planning a stay, these different themes can help you structure your choice of activities: they range from regular visits to the market to a hiking stage and visits focused on nature and heritage conservation. The following places and activities give you specific starting points for planning your own visit.
Market activity at Liesinger Platz
The Liesing farmers’ market takes place every Friday at Liesinger Platz. Around 15 stalls offer fresh food, organic products and culinary specialties. The selection ranges from fresh fruit and vegetables to bakery and dairy products, as well as meat and fish specialties; there are also beekeeping products, fine wines and antipasti.
The traditional Liesing market festival is also held at Liesinger Platz, but annually rather than every Friday like the farmers’ market. Both share the same location, but differ in frequency: the market returns weekly, while the festival takes place once a year.
Paths along the Liesing
The Liesingbach cycle path ends at the Riegermühle. There, the Liesingbach meets Breitenfurter Straße. This describes the end point of the cycle path by naming a specific location and the point where the stream meets the road. The route may be adjusted as part of infrastructure improvements.
A stage of the Rundumadum hiking trail also follows the stream: Stage 8 runs from Breitenfurter Straße along the Liesing to Liesinger Platz, continues to Atzgersdorfer Platz and then follows the Liesing past Wohnpark Alterlaa to Anton-Baumgartner-Straße. The sequence names several points along the way, helping you identify the route by its stops.
Stream landscape and renaturalization
The naturally designed stretches of the Liesing have once again become a healthy stream with good water quality and diverse habitats for animals and plants. The stream landscape therefore has an ecological dimension in addition to its routes: water quality and habitats are among the features of these stretches.
The major Liesingbach renaturalization project began in autumn 2020 on a smaller stretch near Liesinger Platz. It brings greater flood protection, improved water quality and new green spaces for visitors to the nine-kilometer section of the Liesingbach that has not yet been renaturalized.
Park and architectural heritage
A 2018 description of Schlosspark Liesing mentions a small children’s playground as well as benches and tables beneath some very old trees. The park description thus places a play area alongside places to sit beneath old trees.
The Liesing Aqueduct is part of the First Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline and is a listed monument. For those interested in cultural and technological history, it brings together water infrastructure and a specific protected historic structure.
Liesing in the Vienna Woods context
The Vienna Woods include the seven Viennese districts of Hietzing, Penzing, Ottakring, Hernals, Währing, Döbling and Liesing. Liesing is therefore part of a Vienna Woods area that includes several Viennese districts.
