A trip to Wels brings together cultural history and a variety of activities. The town square, the Wels city museums and architectural traces dating from Roman times to the Middle Ages give the city experience a historical focus. The zoo, a short city walk and the Traun Cycle Path R4 offer different highlights. If you are looking for a hotel in Wels, you can first consider whether you want to focus on architectural history and collections or also set aside time for outdoor activities and animals. This way, you can tailor your search to what you would like to do during your stay.

Town Square and Ledererturm

The Wels town square is lined with 64 burghers’ houses. Its architectural unity makes it one of Austria’s most beautiful street squares. Markets have been held here since the Middle Ages, trading mainly in livestock and agricultural products. The market tradition and the unified streetscape offer two perspectives on the same square: its trading history and its architectural impact.

At the end of the town square stands the Ledererturm. It is the only surviving one of four former city towers; the other three were lost in the 19th century. The short Wels city walk also begins at the Ledererturm. The tower is therefore both part of the city’s history and the designated starting point for the walk.

Museums at Two Locations

The Wels city museums present history, art and archaeology at two central locations: Wels Castle and the former Minorite Monastery. At the Wels City Museum – Castle, the city’s development is shown through models and dioramas. The Archaeological Collection at the Minorite Monastery covers Wels’s early history, from the Neolithic period to the time of the Baiuvarii. This lets you choose between an insight into the city’s development and a broad archaeological time span.

The allocation of exhibitions to locations may change. Before visiting a museum, check which topics are currently presented at Wels Castle and the former Minorite Monastery.

Medieval Architectural History and Roman Traces

The Wels Minorite Monastery was founded around 1280 by the Polheim family of Wels. The choir of the Minorite Church was built around 1300 and has been preserved in its original form. Its distinctive features include massive buttresses and a ribbed vault. The two approximate dates place the monastery’s founding and the choir’s construction in chronological order: first the monastery around 1280, then the choir around 1300.

The Roman Road Ovilava offers a different view of the past. On Almgasse, a reconstruction of a Roman house façade forms part of this route. Together with the archaeological collection, the Minorite Monastery and the market history of the town square, it spans the period from Roman themes to medieval architectural and trading history.

City Walk, Cycle Path and Zoo

The short Wels city walk begins at the Ledererturm and is rated very easy. If you plan to take it, check the latest route details before setting out, as they may change. The Traun Cycle Path R4 offers a different focus: it is signposted as R4 in Upper Austria’s regional cycle route network and continues along the Traun towards Wels. This makes it easy to distinguish between a short walk with a designated starting point and a river-linked cycle route.

Wels Zoo is a city park close to the centre, with native and exotic animals as well as many playgrounds. If animals and playgrounds are among your travel interests, it offers an activity of its own alongside the museums and architectural history. The mix of cultural venues, a city walk, a cycle path and a zoo gives you different options for planning your stay in Wels.
