Aichkirchen: Hiking Trails, Parish Church and History
Accommodation in Aichkirchen
Aichkirchen is set in a hilly landscape characterized mainly by forests and farmland. Visitors will find peace and relaxation here. There are several ways to explore the town: hiking and running routes, the cycling link to the Haager-Lies cycle path, the parish church and historic place names. If you are planning a trip, the route lengths can help you get a sense of the distances; the church and local history offer a perspective on Aichkirchen beyond outdoor activities.
Hiking, Running and Cycling
The Aichkirchen Loop is a 10.10-kilometer hiking route. The Three Districts Trail is 8 kilometers long and is also designated as a hiking route; it is also described as a combined walking and cycling route. The Aichkirchner Krailberg Loop is a 7-kilometer running route.
In terms of length, the Krailberg Loop is shorter than the two hiking routes: the Three Districts Trail is 8 kilometers long, and the Aichkirchen Loop is 10.10 kilometers long. This lets you compare the distances while also taking the route types into account: running on the Krailberg Loop, hiking on the Aichkirchen Loop, and hiking and cycling on the Three Districts Trail. Check the route listings before setting out.
Parish Church and Local History
Aichkirchen Parish Church is small, Late Gothic and has a single nave. The single-nave floor plan describes the layout of the church interior, while the Late Gothic designation refers to its period of construction. The church is dedicated to the holy princes of the apostles, Peter and Paul. The patronal feast is celebrated on June 29 and returns each year as a tradition. If you are interested in architecture, the floor plan and period of construction are key; the dedication and feast day are the reference points for the church tradition.
Aichkirchen was first mentioned around 1136 as “Eicha prope coenobium Lambach.” The approximate date refers to this early mention; the historical form of the name differs from its present-day spelling. Another historical milestone is 1991, when Aichkirchen was voted the most beautiful village in Upper Austria. The name and the later distinction mark different periods in the town’s history.
Aichkirchen and the Haager-Lies Cycle Path
Aichkirchen is one of the six towns along the former Haager Lies railway line and is now well connected to the Haager-Lies cycle path via a cycling loop. In the surrounding region, this 22-kilometer cycle path follows a former railway line from Haag am Hausruck to Neukirchen bei Lambach. Two scales should be distinguished: the cycling loop describes Aichkirchen’s connection, while the 22 kilometers refer to the regional route between the towns mentioned. The three routes, ranging from 7 to 10.10 kilometers, therefore sit alongside a longer regional cycling route. Before a cycling trip, check the route, conditions and accessibility; a change to the route may also affect the connection.
