Thalheim bei Wels: Art, Churches and Trails
Accommodation in Thalheim bei Wels
Thalheim bei Wels brings together the Reinberg ridge on the banks of the Traun, contemporary art and churches with a long history of construction and consecration. This offers travellers a choice of different focuses: outdoor activities, a museum visit or a look at the town’s history and culture.
Reinberg and routes: landscape with specific details
Reinberg is a ridge about 76.5 m high on the southern bank of the Traun, opposite the city of Wels. Geologically, it consists of an upper layer of clay over permeable gravel and an impermeable marl deposit. As a result, springs emerge on its slopes or at its foot. The paths on Reinberg also have a history: the Wels Beautification Association laid them out in 1902.
The routes vary in type and length, helping you choose a sporting activity. The Audi run is an 11.0 km running route with 135 metres of elevation gain. The ECM cycling route is called “Voralpenblick” and is 23.2 km long. Another notable route is the Traun Cycle Path R4 in Thalheim bei Wels, one of the top highlights. As route conditions may change, check the latest information before setting out.
Contemporary art at the Angerlehner Museum
The Angerlehner Museum in Thalheim bei Wels is one of Austria’s largest private museums for contemporary art. The Angerlehner Collection comprises more than 2,500 works in this art form. The museum offers an art education programme throughout the year, as well as private one-hour guided tours for groups of up to 25 people. The duration and group size are useful details when planning a group tour. Check the museum’s latest programme information before your visit.
Churches and historical milestones
The parish church of Thalheim was consecrated in 1070 by Bishop Altmann of Passau in honour of Saint Stephen. In the mid-15th century, it acquired its late Gothic form, which it has largely retained to this day. St. Ägydi is dedicated to Saint Giles and was opened for worship on 11 April 1189; its Gothic design has been preserved in its original form. The late Gothic pilgrimage church of Maria Schauersberg was consecrated in 1490. The dates and architectural styles offer different points of reference in history, from the parish church’s early consecration date to its late Gothic architecture.
Another historical trace leads to the Hof zu Thalheim, later known as Schloss Traunegg: the first mention of the estate dates from 1283. Together with the churches, this span of time offers a second way to explore the town’s history, distinct from Reinberg and its routes.
