Au an der Traun can be considered for travel planning primarily in terms of cycling routes and the Ufermann Chapel. The Planet Trail adds an educational focus, while Stage 7 of the Wels-Land Loop passes through Au an der Traun. There is also the architectural history of a chapel that is protected as a monument by ordinance. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these themes provide a specific framework for choosing a destination: you can focus on cycling, the Planet Trail or local architectural history.

Cycling routes and different points of reference

On the Planet Trail, the relative sizes and distances of the planets are shown at a scale of 1:1 billion. It can be explored on foot or by bicycle. The display thus combines two aspects of astronomical dimensions: it shows both relative sizes and distances using the same scale. The Mautstraße in Au an der Traun is also part of the Planet Trail route. This distinguishes the Planet Trail from the Wels-Land Loop for planning purposes, as the latter focuses on the stage route and road surface.

Stage 7 of the Wels-Land Loop runs from Marchtrenk to Thalheim through Au an der Traun. 55 percent of the stage consists of gravel or natural ground, and 45 percent of paved paths or asphalt. The mix of surfaces is therefore almost evenly split, with a slightly higher proportion of gravel or natural ground. When planning your tour, it is worth checking current route updates, as the surfaces may change due to maintenance or construction work.

The Römerradweg passes the Marchtrenk hydroelectric power station and continues to the turnoff for Marchtrenk. Beyond Au, you can reach Marchtrenk via Weißkirchner Straße. On the Wels-Land Loop, Au is part of the stage; on the Römerradweg, the hydroelectric power station and the turnoff are specific points of reference. This makes it easier to distinguish between the different route connections when planning your trip.

Ufermann Chapel: History and Architecture

The Ufermann Chapel is located at Mautstraße 8, 4614 Marchtrenk, in the district of Au an der Traun. It was built in 1814 by the Ufermann inn and is protected as a monument by ordinance. Its tall, pointed tent roof is covered with wooden shingles. Along with its historical context, the roof’s shape and material give the building a distinct architectural character. The chapel may have been built as a token of gratitude for crossing the then-unregulated Traun safely by Zille boat.

Landscape around Au an der Traun

The landscape offers a different focus from the cycling routes and architectural history. East of Au an der Traun, several hedgerows have been preserved among areas of agricultural land. At a large pond near Au, there is a relatively well-developed, partly sparse strip of riverside woodland with ash trees, hybrid poplars, silver birches, red-twig dogwoods and crack willows. The hedgerows between cultivated areas and the woodland by the pond represent different forms of landscape. These natural and landscape features thus complement the routes and historic building as additional themes for planning your trip.
