Unterweitersdorf – Hiking Trails and Horse-Drawn Railway
Accommodation in Unterweitersdorf
Unterweitersdorf offers hiking trails between the Gusental, the Kleine Gusen and traces of the horse-drawn railway. The routes vary in length, stated walking time and destination: they lead, for example, to an adventure trail, through the Kleine Gusental or to a forest chapel. You can choose a route based on whether a set time frame, a particular landscape or a specific destination matters most to you.
Choose Hiking Trails by Length and Destination
The Horse-Drawn Railway Hiking Trail runs from the Unterweitersdorf sports ground through the Gusental to Neumarkt. The route is listed as 10 kilometres long, with a walking time of about 2.5 hours. On the Neumarkt–Unterweitersdorf section, the original horse-drawn railway track and an adventure trail with nine stations are preserved along all but a few short stretches. If you would like to compare these details with a shorter hike, the Legend Hiking Trail is listed as 5.2 kilometres long, with a walking time of about 1.5 hours. At 5.2 kilometres and about 1.5 hours of walking, the Legend Hiking Trail is shorter in both distance and walking time than the Horse-Drawn Railway Hiking Trail, which is 10 kilometres long and takes about 2.5 hours.
The Cultural Hiking Trail is a circular route about 5.5 kilometres long, following the former horse-drawn railway track or running through the Kleine Gusen valley. It is suitable for wheelchair users and for those with pushchairs. The trails described therefore differ not only in length but also in focus: the Cultural Hiking Trail highlights its circular route and connection to the track or valley, while the Horse-Drawn Railway Hiking Trail connects two places and the Legend Hiking Trail is a themed route of its own.
The local trails also have different destinations. The U7 Hiking Trail runs from Unterweitersdorf via Pfaffendorf to Loibersdorf. Part of it follows the horse-drawn railway track and passes through the Kleine Gusental landscape and nature conservation area. Above the village, the U1 Hiking Trail, “To the Forest Shrine,” offers views of Unterweitersdorf and towards Wartberg. The U2 Hiking Trail, “Through the Auster Forest,” passes the historic boundary stone shared by the three municipalities of Hagenberg, Wartberg and Unterweitersdorf, as well as the “Devil’s Seat.” The U6 Hiking Trail, “Mary in the Pine Forest,” leads via Lindach to the forest chapel.
Numerous marked hiking trails run through the municipality; most start at the municipal office. Before setting out, check local information about trail access and conditions. The stated distances and walking times give you a concrete basis for planning, while destinations such as the forest chapel, boundary stone or adventure trail offer different points of interest.
The Horse-Drawn Railway and Local History
The historic horse-drawn railway runs through the Kleine Gusen valley in Unterweitersdorf. Numerous notable viaducts can still be seen there. The route and historic structures give the landscape a distinctive connection to the former railway track. Those interested in the region’s history can also visit the “Frenchmen’s Grave 1809” memorial stone near the Sonnleitner farm in Hattmannsdorf: it commemorates the fighting in the Unterweitersdorf area in 1809. On 7 May, a skirmish took place; on 19 May, a clash occurred between a French-Württemberger rifle regiment that had entered the Mühlviertel and the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Hussars and Lindenau Infantry.
The WeiglmĂĽhle also connects local history with a preserved historic site. The first records of the mill date from around 1481. Its mill equipment, some of which is more than 100 years old, has been preserved in its original condition. Since 2000, the WeiglmĂĽhle has been used for hospitality, and a snack station invites visitors to stop there. Check whether it is currently open before visiting.
Landscape and Cycling
Part of the municipality of Unterweitersdorf lies within the “Kleines Gusental” nature and landscape conservation area, which is suitable for cycling. This protected area adds another perspective on the landscape to the hiking trails: while some routes explicitly pass through the protected area, the cycling suitability applies to the Kleine Gusental. During your stay, you can choose between hikes with named stops, the history of the horse-drawn railway and cycling in this landscape.
