Heiterwang: Lake, Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Heiterwang
Heiterwang offers several reasons to stay: activities on Lake Heiterwang, trails around Lake Heiterwang and Lake Plansee, local history and seasonal winter sports. When looking for a hotel, you can consider whether your trip will focus mainly on the water, hiking, culture or winter activities. The train station and a culinary experience add travel and dining options to these themes.
Lake Heiterwang and the Circular Trail
Lake Heiterwang is connected to Lake Plansee by a 300 m-long connecting canal. Rowing, surfing, swimming, diving and fishing are possible on the lake; conditions may vary by season. A signposted circular trail around Lake Heiterwang starts at the SeestraĂźe car park. This means you can choose between an activity on the lake and a walk for your time by the water. If a particular seasonal activity is important to your plans, check the current conditions in advance.
Hiking and Winter Sports
The circular hike around Lake Plansee in the Heiterwang area runs either directly along the lakeshore or on a panoramic trail around the lake. It is classified as moderately difficult, is 14.6 km long and has a stated duration of 3:30 hours. The distance and time estimate help you assess the effort involved in a day of hiking; conditions may vary depending on the season. By contrast, the A15 Moosloipe trail runs along flat terrain beside the canal towards Lake Heiterwang. In winter, the Karlift ski area in Heiterwang is another option, suitable for beginners and families. Check operating status and dates for this seasonal offer separately.
Travel by Train
Heiterwang train station is a stop for services between Reutte and Vils, as well as services between Bichlbach, Lermoos, Ehrwald, Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany and Innsbruck. There is no ticket counter there; tickets are available on the train. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from the station to Lake Heiterwang. As train services can change, it is worth checking the current timetable before departure.
Church and Local History
The protected historic ensemble in Heiterwang includes the parish church of Our Lady of the Assumption, the cemetery and war memorials for the First and Second World Wars. The parish church contains frescoes by Josef Anton Walch of Kaufbeuren, dating from 1750; the Rococo stucco was created by Josef Fischer of FĂĽssen. Frescoes are wall paintings, while stucco refers to sculpted decorations. This makes it possible to distinguish between two different artistic elements in the church: the paintings and the sculptural decoration. The historic ensemble thus brings together religious architecture, art history and commemoration of both world wars.
A Culinary Highlight
The lakeside restaurant offers cheese and wine tastings in the hotel’s almost 100-year-old vaulted wine cellar. If you would like to include a tasting in your plans, ask about current availability, as the offer may change.
