You can get to know Breitenwang through Plansee and its local history. The developed lakeshore area is within the municipality; at the same time, the historical themes range from Roman times to the 18th century. If you are looking for a hotel in Breitenwang, you can plan your stay around the lake, outdoor activities or cultural history.

Plansee: Swimming, diving and boat trips

You can swim and dive at Plansee. The bathing area Plansee, Campingplatz, received the overall rating “Excellent bathing water quality” from the European Union for the years 2021 to 2025. The Plansee and Heiterwanger See boat service operates seasonally between the two lakes; if you are planning a trip, check the current operating days. Another way to experience Plansee is to hike the circular route around the lake: sections run directly along the shore or offer panoramic views. This mix of lakeside stretches and viewpoints gives the hike a different focus from swimming or diving. This way, you can choose how to balance the activities at the same lake.

Getting around Breitenwang

Plansee circular bus route 9624 runs from Reutte railway station via Breitenwang to Plansee, stopping at Seespitze and by Hotel Forelle. As seasonal timetables are subject to change, check the current departure times if you are relying on this connection. You can rent mountain bikes and e-bikes at Camping Sennalpe; confirm current availability in advance.

Another viewpoint is at the Stuibenfälle waterfalls: the platform at the lower waterfall in Breitenwang is accessible without steps from the Stuibenfall car park. If step-free access is important for your plans, check the current accessibility information before your visit.

Roman connections and church history

The Via Claudia Augusta is associated with a Roman military road station dating from 46 AD, which was probably located in Breitenwang. Emperor Lothar III stopped in Breitenwang on his Italian campaign and died there on 4 December 1137. Another work of cultural history is the Holy Sepulchre. It was created in 1738 for the Church of the Resurrection, which is right next to the deanery parish church. The Baroque painter Balthasar Riepp created it with the help of his student from Reutte, Franz Anton Zeiller. Taken together, these connections show three distinct historical periods: a Roman road station, a medieval visit and a Baroque work of religious art.

Crafts and activities

The Musteralpe show dairy also offers an insight into traditional crafts: you can watch the cheese being made through a glass window. Demonstrations and tastings may be seasonal; if you are planning specifically around them, ask about the current arrangements. With the Gästekarte Aktiv Card, you can take part in curling free of charge in Breitenwang. The difference also lies in how you take part: at the dairy, you watch through the glass window; at curling, you join in.
