Geology on the Winklerberg Nature Trail

The Winklerberg geological nature trail passes through idyllic and varied countryside. The nature park’s official geological classification attributes it to the largest landslide in the Central Alps. Eleven information boards provide geological information; there is also information about the wildlife of the Ötztal along the trail. The route begins at a parking area near the bridge over the Ache in Winklen and ends at a water playground in Winkelboden. This means both the starting point and destination are established, while the boards along the way cover geology and the wildlife of the Ötztal.

Hiking Trails and Alpine Pasture Destinations

The Rieder Seite circular hike starts at the free parking area in the hamlet of Winklen. It is mostly flat and suitable for wheelchair users and strollers, except for the climb to the Pestkapelle. Keep this exception in mind if you include the circular route in your plans.

Wurzbergalm in Längenfeld, Tyrol, can be reached via the Unterried/Winkeln parking area on a well-marked, four-kilometre trail. The Winklen–Wurzbergalm–Winklen route is listed as taking three and a half hours and is designated as a winter hike with the option of sledging. The trail length describes access to the alpine pasture, while the time estimate applies to the designated winter route.

Stabelealm lies above the tree line at just under 2,000 metres. It is a starting point for numerous peaks and mountain lakes; climbers can also reach the alpine pasture via the Lehner Klettersteig via ferrata. The alpine pasture destinations described therefore differ considerably: for Wurzbergalm, the trail length and waymarking are specified; for Stabelealm, its elevation, possible mountain destinations and access via a via ferrata for climbers are given.

Winkelbergsee and Seasonal Activities

Winkelbergsee is a spring-fed lake with three islands in the forest. The walkable Witch’s Cave is also part of an excursion to the lake. Fishing at Winkelbergsee is possible from 1 May to mid-October, with prior registration. Check the seasonal information before your visit if you plan to take advantage of this option.

Chapels and Local Fish Sales

Two local chapels in Winklen are protected as historical monuments, but on different legal grounds: the Maria Himmelfahrt Chapel is protected by regulation, while the Mariahilf Chapel is protected by an official decision. These two monuments therefore offer different legal points of reference for a cultural walk.
