When planning a trip to Burgstein, it’s worth taking a look at the different hikes: the Huben–Burgstein–Längenfeld route is easy and takes about two hours. The Wasserläufer Brand–Burgstein circular hike is moderately difficult and leads from Längenfeld through the gorge up to Brand and on to Burgstein. There is also a mountain tour to Gamskogel and a multi-pitch climbing route on the Burgsteinwand.

Hiking Trails and Views

The Huben–Burgstein–Längenfeld route offers panoramic views of the valley basin around Längenfeld and Huben. From Runhof, the route reaches Burgstein via a road. The approximate walking time of two hours and its rating as an easy hiking trail are part of this tour. This makes it easy to distinguish when planning from the moderately difficult Wasserläufer Brand–Burgstein circular hike, which follows a different route.

The Wasserläufer Brand–Burgstein circular hike starts in Längenfeld, leads through the gorge up to Brand and then continues to Burgstein. Shortly before Burgstein, it crosses an 84-metre-long suspension bridge connecting Brand and Burgstein, suspended 220 metres above the valley floor. The return route follows the Albin Egger-Lienz themed trail. Both the route through the gorge and the bridge and themed trail are useful points of reference for this hike.

The old Burgstein road serves as a forest track for the return journey from Burgstein to Längenfeld. When hiking in winter, you should take seasonal trail conditions into account. For planning, it is helpful to keep the return route for each hike in mind rather than combining details from different hikes into a single route.

Chapels and Architectural History

The Burgstein village chapel was built around 1670. It is a two-bay Baroque building with a three-sided choir beneath a steep gabled roof and a wooden roof turret. If you are interested in religious architecture, take a look at the choir’s end and the roof structure. Its architectural form and approximate date of construction give the village chapel its own cultural and historical significance alongside the hiking destinations.

Burgstein is also home to the wayside chapel, which is also known as the Maria-Königin Chapel. Both names refer to this chapel. So, as well as the hikes described, Burgstein offers a religious destination that is known by more than one name.

Mountain Tour and Climbing

The mountain tour to Gamskogel leads from Burgstein over alpine meadows, forest paths and a distinctive ridge. From Gamskogel, there are impressive views down to Längenfeld and far-reaching views of the glacier-covered peaks of the Ötztal Alps. Check alpine conditions before setting out. The views and varied route over meadows, forest paths and ridges define the character of this mountain tour.

Another option for climbing enthusiasts is the multi-pitch route “Schwalbennest – Burgsteinwand” on the so-called Burgsteinwand near Längenfeld in the Ötztal. It is quite different from the hiking trails described above. Before setting out, check the route conditions and protection on site.
