For your trip planning, Stenzengreith offers concrete points of interest in its landscape, hiking and cultural history. The Stenzengreith themed trail leads through forests, pastures and orchards. Cultural highlights include Gutenberg Castle, the Loreto Chapel and the former mills in the MĂĽhlgraben. The Great Raab Gorge is also a hiking destination in the municipality of Gutenberg, which Stenzengreith belongs to.

The Stenzengreith Themed Trail

The themed trail runs along the Kleinsemmeringbach stream and leads through forests, pastures and orchards. At the start, near the Kreuzwirt in Stenzengreith, a large panoramic information board explains the area. Near the Kreuzwirt, the trail also offers a panoramic view over the Weiz area. This means you can experience two different aspects from the same local vantage point: the board provides information, while the view opens out across the landscape.

After the Bockhof, the trail reaches a small waterfall; it also continues as far as the village chapel in Breitenfeld. The themed trail was updated and extended in 2017. These stops give the trail its own character, combining landscape, water and a named destination.

Gutenberg Castle, the Loreto Chapel and the MĂĽhlgraben

Gutenberg Castle was built from 1184 on a rocky outcrop projecting into the Raab Gorge. From 1567, it underwent extensive renovations in the Renaissance style under Hans von Stubenberg. The dates mark two different construction phases: the beginning of the castle’s construction and a later, extensive redesign. To understand the building’s history, it is worth distinguishing between these phases.

The Loreto Chapel stands west of and above the castle, to which it is connected by an avenue. Sigmund von Stubenberg had it built from 1691 as a sign of Catholicism. The castle and chapel therefore differ both in when they were built and in the stated religious purpose of the chapel. Until 70 years ago, numerous water-powered stone mills turned in the MĂĽhlgraben. They add another perspective to the history of the area: here, the focus is on mills and the use of water power.

The Great Raab Gorge in the Municipality

In the municipality of Gutenberg, which Stenzengreith belongs to, the Great Raab Gorge is over 10 kilometres long and offers visitors a hiking experience. It has been a nature reserve since 1970 and an EU Natura 2000 protected area since 2006 under the Habitats Directive and the Birds Directive. The gorge’s length, hiking experience and protected status are different features. When planning your trip, you can consider the gorge as a separate hiking destination alongside the Stenzengreith themed trail.
