For your stay in Sankt Marein bei Neumarkt, cultural history and water-related hiking trails offer two distinct thematic focuses. When looking for a hotel, this distinction can be a useful starting point: consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on historic sites or on hiking.

Churches, a Castle and Remembrance

The Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Sankt Marein bei Neumarkt is listed in the monument protection regulations for Murau. The entire Lind Castle complex in Sankt Marein bei Neumarkt is also listed there. Both buildings offer concrete points of interest for anyone interested in cultural history.

The Other Homeland Museum is located at Lind Castle. It includes the permanent exhibition “The Familiar & the Foreign” and a memorial to the history of the Mauthausen subcamp. The exhibition and memorial represent different thematic focuses within the museum.

The castle park is also located on the grounds around Lind Castle. In Pöllau, the restored blast furnace and the miners’ house are among the surviving reminders of Pöllau’s importance as an ore deposit. The mining museum in Pöllau offers insights into mining in past centuries. Paintings have been preserved at St. James’s Church; they are believed to be Early Gothic and to date from the mid-13th century.

Water-themed hiking trails

The hiking route through Graggerschlucht Gorge follows a mountain stream to the cascading waterfall. The “Back to the (Pöllau) Source” hiking trail is devoted entirely to water. This circular trail leads into the centre of St. Marein and back to the Graggerschlucht Gorge car park.

The two routes differ mainly in their stated focus: along the Graggerschlucht route, the stream and cascading waterfall accompany you; the loop to the Pöllau Source includes the village centre and the return to the car park. You can therefore choose the route description whose specific stops best suit your plans.

There is a car park in MĂĽhldorf, in Sankt Marein bei Neumarkt, for visitors to Graggerschlucht Gorge. Check the current parking situation before setting out. The gorge is open seasonally: free daily access is indicated for summer, while it is closed during the winter months. Check the current access arrangements before your visit.

Geological Traces

The glacial potholes in the cemetery of St. Marein are particularly well formed. They were created when meltwater scoured the rock as the ice masses of the last Ice Age retreated. This geological background gives the site a different focus from the ecclesiastical and mining heritage.

The source springs in Pöllau and Zeutschach are also connected: an underground cave system links the two springs. Alongside the geological traces in St. Marein, the underground connection between two springs is therefore another of the area’s water-related features described here.
