Wildalpen lies on the northern side of the Hochschwab massif, where the Salza attracts whitewater sports enthusiasts. The area also offers a museum, a themed trail, hikes, a cave tour and seasonal skiing. If you are looking for hotels in Wildalpen, these different activities can help you decide whether the town suits your travel plans.

Water activities on the Salza

The Naturfreunde Wildwasserzentrum Wildalpen offers kayaking, SUP and canoeing courses, as well as kayak safety courses and family rafting. The different courses cater to a range of interests in paddling and water safety. Rafting, kayaking and Riverbug tours are also available in Wildalpen. This lets you distinguish between courses and different types of tours without planning them as the same experience. Confirm course availability before your trip.

Hiking and nature

The Wald-Wasser (Forest-Water) themed trail provides information about native tree species. Another natural attraction is Brunnsee, a lake in a nature reserve connected with the Hochschwab massif. The hike to Brunnsee follows Trail 91 and takes around three hours. This approximate duration gives you a guide when planning the outing as part of your stay.

The orchards are in the Hopfgarten district of the nature park municipality of Wildalpen. They help preserve old and rare fruit varieties, mainly apples and pears, from the traditional orchards of the Styrian Eisenwurzen Nature and Geopark. The gardens are freely accessible and can be reached on foot. The focus here is not on a sporting excursion, but on preserving regional fruit varieties.

Museum and culture

The HochQuellenWasser Museum presents its content in an interactive, multimedia and child-friendly way. It provides information about the construction and history of the Second Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline. The HochQuellenWasser museum area in Rooms 1 to 9, as well as the Wasser-Wald-Wild(nis) (Water-Forest-Wild(erness)) exhibition, is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility.

For groups of ten or more, guided tours are available outside opening hours; advance booking is required. The tour lasts around an hour and a half. As booking conditions may change, it is advisable to confirm arrangements before you arrive. Kunst im Keller (Art in the Cellar) can also be visited, but only by prior arrangement.

Arzberg Cave and winter activities

The tour through Arzberg Cave lasts three hours. Visitors enter the cave wearing a helmet and headlamp; a certified cave guide provides safety and information. Fossil teeth and bone remains from animals weighing up to 1,200 kilograms can currently be found in the cave. Confirm arrangements for your visit before travelling.

In winter, the Winterhöhe Wildalpen ski lifts offer a total of around 1.5 kilometres of pistes. Facilities include a small platter lift and a longer drag lift for skiers and snowboarders; the lifts are suitable for families. As operations are seasonal, check operating conditions for your travel dates. The Waldsauna Wildalpen may also appeal to water sports enthusiasts and hikers; locals and passers-by are welcome, too. Check the operating arrangements in advance.
