Gaishorn Am See offers a range of reasons to plan a trip: the swimming lake and lakeside walking trail, the route to Mödlinger Hut, two churches with historical dates, and winter activities. When planning, you can decide whether you are looking for time by the water, a hike, local history or winter exercise.

Swimming Lake and Lakeside Walking Trail

At Gaishorn swimming lake, there is a large sunbathing lawn, a children's play area and a viewing platform. These three facilities offer different ways to spend time at the lake: relaxing outdoors, playing and enjoying the view.

The lakeside walking trail runs along the northern shore of Lake Gaishorn. It passes a bathing cove, information boards and bridges, and offers views of the reed belt on the opposite southern shore. Most of the trail is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs; bear this limitation in mind if you plan to do the entire route.

The two lake-related options offer different ways to plan your day: on the lakeside walking trail, you follow a shore-side route with stops and views, while the swimming lake focuses on the sunbathing lawn, play area and viewing platform. Whether you would rather walk or spend time at the facilities may be the deciding factor.

On Foot to Mödlinger Hut

You can reach Mödlinger Hut on foot in 2½ hours if you start at the ÖBB railway station or in the centre of Gaishorn Am See. The possible routes are hiking trail 671 or the forest road. The time estimate is the same for both starting points; the starting location and the choice between the hiking trail and forest road are therefore the specific options to consider when planning. You can treat 2½ hours as the time needed to reach the hut and decide in advance which of the two starting points fits your day.

The traditional curling match between the valley municipalities of Johnsbach and Gaishorn Am See takes place every year at Mödlinger Hut. If you would like to visit for this tradition, check the specific event date in advance. The route to the hut and the annual curling match are different reasons to visit: one is a hike to the hut, while the other is a recurring gathering of the two valley municipalities.

Churches and Historical Dates

The Church of St. Virgilius of Salzburg is located on Sonnberg. It was built between 1448 and 1465 and bears the date 1524. The Parish Church of the Holy Trinity in Gaishorn Am See is listed with the years 1180 and 1520. The dates are presented differently: for St. Virgilius, a construction period and the additional year 1524 appear together, while for the Holy Trinity there are two years.

Winter Activities

In winter, the leisure area at Lake Gaishorn is used as an ice rink. Cross-country ski trails are also groomed around Gaishorn Am See. These are two different winter activities: ice skating in the leisure area and cross-country skiing on trails around the town. If either option is important for your travel dates, check the ice rink or trail operations in advance.
