Discover Großlobming
Accommodation in Großlobming
Großlobming combines a rich architectural and artistic history with trails through the town center, across fields and meadows, and to named viewpoints. For your travel planning, the historical themes and trails can be distinguished by their respective highlights: some focus on recorded architectural history and church art, others on the townscape, open countryside, or a particular view.
The Castle and Historical Milestones
Today’s Großlobming Castle is an extension of a fortification that, according to tradition, is said to have already existed in 1050. The year refers to the fortification mentioned in tradition; it is not a confirmed date for today’s castle. During the Reformation, the lower castle was a center of Protestantism. Alongside its architectural history, this historical connection offers a glimpse into the religious role of the town during that era. From 1777, the Viennese master builder Ignaz Plaschg undertook a substantial new construction of Großlobming Castle. This brings together an early date explicitly identified as traditional and a later building project named with its master builder and starting year.
The Parish Church and Art History
The parish church of Großlobming is a late Gothic building from the 15th century. The main nave’s vault, the high altar, and the two side altars date from the Baroque period. For an art-historical perspective, it helps to distinguish these layers: the late Gothic classification describes the building, while the Baroque classification applies to the elements mentioned. This makes it possible to consider the church’s architectural history separately from its furnishings, without assigning both to the same period.
The sandstone statues by the Master of Großlobming are another point of art-historical interest. They are considered major works of the Soft Style in Austria. Their material, the master’s designation, and their stylistic classification offer a further perspective on art history. If you are interested in the development of art and architecture, the castle, parish church, and this art-historical context offer different topics to explore individually.
Choose Trails by Landscape and Destination
The Großlobming Field Circular Trail runs through the town center of Großlobming and across the extensive fields and meadows of the municipality of Lobmingtal. This route connects the town center with open agricultural landscapes. The Großlobming Panorama Route offers a view of the Judenburg-Knittelfeld Basin from the Murtalblick bench. The Lobmingtal High Trail connects Großlobming and Kleinlobming.
The Lobmingtal Cycling and Adventure Trail has a different focus: it is a scenic cycling route through Großlobming, following the Lobming stream and passing through Kleinlobming. At the larch wayside shrine on the forest circular trail via Reitinger, there is a place to rest with a view of Großlobming and the Seckau Alps rising to the north. When choosing a route, you can focus on the specific differences: the town center and fields, a connection between two places, a cycling route along the stream, or a named viewpoint. The two viewpoints also offer different perspectives: the Murtalblick bench looks out over the basin, while the wayside shrine offers views of Großlobming and the Seckau Alps.
