Discover Sankt Andrä in the Lungau
Accommodation in Sankt Andrä in the Lungau
Sankt Andrä in the Lungau lies at an altitude of 1,044 metres in the tranquil Taurach Valley. Local attractions range from the protected branch church of St. Andrew and the Samsonturm to the Taurachbahn, the memorial sites at Passeggen and trails for various activities. When planning your trip, it is worth noting the differences: train rides and cross-country skiing are seasonal, while a circular hike is described by its length and route. This can help you decide which theme best suits your stay.
Church and Samsonturm
The Catholic branch church of St. Andrew is a listed monument under the relevant regulation. The Federal Monuments Authority’s list of protected monuments, as at 30 June 2025, records this protected status. The Samsonturm is also a local attraction. Samson and his dwarfs are part of the Samsonturm’s depiction. The Samson figure is 5.80 metres tall and weighs 85 kilograms. If you are interested in different forms of local cultural heritage, the protected church and the Samson figure offer two clearly distinct points of interest.
Taurachbahn and Passeggen
The Taurachbahn is Austria’s highest narrow-gauge railway. Nostalgic train rides through the Lungau, from Mauterndorf to St. Andrä and back, were announced for summer 2026. This means the offer includes both the outward route and the return trip. When planning, consider the right travel date as well as the route: check the timetable for your travel period, as the service is seasonal and operating days may change.
Passeggen is a small rise between Tamsweg and Sankt Andrä. The Passeggen Place of Execution Trail is a 3 km circular walking route. The place of execution and the site of the fire are located along it; both are now memorial sites and remain in their original condition. The circular route and its length describe the walk, while the memorial sites give it its historical significance. Passeggen’s location between Tamsweg and Sankt Andrä also places these special sites within the wider landscape.
Wurzi the Forest Witch offers a separate guided family experience: she leads families through the Passeggen forest on a very easy hiking trail suitable for children. As dates for the guided activity may change, check the current programme in advance if you plan to take part.
Cross-country skiing and cycling
In winter, the Taurachloipe St. Andrä is designated as a technically snowmaking-equipped cross-country ski trail. It is also described as illuminated and can be used after sunset. Snowmaking and lighting are two separate features of the trail. As this is seasonal tourism information, check operating conditions before your visit.
There are very well signposted cycling trails in and around Sankt Andrä. Their geographical scope is broader than the name of the Taurachloipe, while the trail’s lighting and use after sunset are additional features. If you are choosing between cross-country skiing and cycling, you can compare the features described here: season and lighting are key for the ski trail, while signposting and routes around the village are key for cycling.
