Tweng: Hiking, Winter and Culture
Accommodation in Tweng
Tweng is located in the Lungau region of Salzburg, on the southern side of the Radstädter Tauern. Part of the Obertauern ski region lies within the municipality. Tweng offers several distinct themes to help you choose a destination: hiking trails and mountain tours, winter activities, and cultural and natural attractions. You can first consider whether you want to focus on outdoor activities, winter options or sights. Its location within part of the Obertauern ski region adds a separate regional connection to these themes.
Hiking and Cultural Trails
The Tennfall waterfall, located at the entrance to the Lantschfeld Valley, can be reached via the Tweng circular trail. Tweng also has numerous hiking trails and mountain tours. When narrowing down your options, you can distinguish the specific route to Tennfall via the Tweng circular trail from the broader range of other trails and tours. Cultural trails have a distinct focus: they lead to monuments, geological features and natural attractions. This lets you choose a hike not only by trail type, but also by the kind of destination you want to visit. A waterfall, a monument, a geological site or a natural attraction each offers a different reason to explore the area.
Winter Activities
There are also various options for winter activities. Tweng has a 15 km cross-country ski trail. Seasonal conditions and operations can change, so check both before your visit. Snow-covered fields and forests invite you to go winter hiking. Horse-drawn sleigh rides are also offered, but availability is seasonal. When planning, you can distinguish the options by activity and season: cross-country skiing on the trail, winter hiking through the snow-covered landscape, or a seasonally available horse-drawn sleigh ride. This lets you choose your winter activities based on how you want to explore the area and take the seasonal availability of the trail and sleigh rides into account.
Sights in Tweng
Tweng’s sights include the Lantschfeld Chapel, the Roman milestones and the Catholic parish church of the Holy Cross. The chapel stands at the end of the Tweng Lantschfeld Valley, at an elevation of 1,649 metres. It is protected as a listed monument by ordinance; the Salzburg heritage list dated 30 June 2025 records it accordingly. Two Roman milestones stand at the edge of the forest beside the B99, the Katschberg road, between Obertauern and Tweng. The parish church of the Holy Cross is another sight in Tweng.
The different categories can help you choose based on your interests: the milestones represent Roman heritage, while the chapel and parish church are religious sights. The Lantschfeld Chapel stands out for its location at the end of the valley, its elevation and its listed status. This lets you choose cultural attractions based on the historical connection that interests you most.
