When looking for a hotel in Mauterndorf, you can plan your trip around culture, hiking, cycling or seasonal activities. The castle and historic village scenery offer a different focus from marked trails, cycling options or a ride on the Taurachbahn. There are different distances to consider when planning: the roughly one-kilometre loop around the castle, a one-hour village walk or the approximately 2.5-hour route from the valley to the local mountain.

Castle, village scenery and museum

Mauterndorf Castle dates back to the 13th century and was once the summer residence of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg. The Mauterndorf toll station was first mentioned in a document in 1002. At the foot of the castle, distinctive stepped-gable houses shape the historic village scenery. The 44-metre-high keep offers views across the Lungau; the castle chapel contains a High Gothic fresco dating from around 1350. The chapel gallery has been open to visitors since 2018. Check the latest visitor information before your visit so you can plan access.

The Lungau Landscape Museum collection can be viewed in the castle. It covers customs, rural life, minerals and religions. In summer, the museum follows Mauterndorf Castle’s opening hours; it is closed in winter. Check the exact visiting hours in advance. In fine weather, the Burgschenke serves Lungau specialities on a terrace overlooking the surrounding mountains. Mauterndorf is also one of the ten municipalities in the Salzburg Lungau with a Samson figure.

Walking and hiking trails

A roughly one-kilometre loop leads around Mauterndorf Castle through the grounds of the old castle park. Mauterndorf also has marked hiking and walking trails, ranging from a one-hour village walk to trips in the surrounding area. You can choose between a short loop by the castle, a village walk with a stated duration and longer excursions.

The Grosseck-Speiereck adventure mountain is Mauterndorf’s local mountain and a hiking area in summer. You can reach it from the valley on foot via several trails in around 2.5 hours, or by cable car. This makes it easy to distinguish a walk in the village from an outing up the mountain; an approximate time is provided for the route on foot.

Cycling, winter activities and rides

The Mur Cycle Path, also known as the Tour de Mur, starts in Mauterndorf. The village also offers mountain biking, road cycling and trekking tours. For winter, a 25-kilometre cross-country ski trail to Tweng/Lanschfeld is described; it starts at the campsite in Mauterndorf. Its length and destination give this route a different planning framework from the village’s walking and hiking trails.

There are also various options at Mauterndorf airfield: it is a starting point for varied flights through the mountainous surroundings. Passengers can enjoy a flight experience and, under the supervision of an experienced flight instructor, take the controls themselves. The Taurachbahn offers seasonal nostalgic steam train rides through the Lungau from Mauterndorf to St. Andrä and back. Check the current timetable before your trip so you can coordinate the ride with your travel dates.
