Zederhaus: Hiking, Nature Park and Culture
Accommodation in Zederhaus
Discover Zederhaus through several specific themes: hiking in Riedingtal Nature Park, learning about nature and regional history. If you are looking for a hotel in Zederhaus, the trails and cultural sights can help you plan your stay.
Hiking in Riedingtal Nature Park
Riedingtal Nature Park is located in the municipality of Zederhaus in the state of Salzburg, on the southern edge of the Niedere Tauern range. At 2,711 metres, Weißeck is its highest peak. The Central Alpine Long-Distance Trail No. 702 runs through the nature park along the northern side of the valley, above the road. The themed trail “The Power of Quiet Waters” connects the Niedere Tauern with the Hohe Tauern.
There are also circular hiking trails leading to various spots in the Riedingtal. A circular trail starts at the nature park centre by Schlierersee, passes Hubertus Chapel and takes about an hour. Another route starts at Schliereralm and goes around the Rieding reservoir; it also passes Hubertus Chapel on the southwest shore. Details about the starting points and routes help distinguish the two trails.
Experience nature and alpine farming
Guided tours of the nature park give children and adults expert insights into the region’s animal and plant life, traditional alpine customs and geological features. The Zederhaus Forest Nature Trail focuses on different topics: its stations cover local plants, insects and birds, forest landscapes and ways of making use of wood. The nature-related topics therefore range from local habitats to the use of the forest.
The staffed alpine huts in the Riedingtal serve regional specialities, fresh alpine milk and homemade cheese. There are nine staffed huts in the nature park, including six certified Almsommer huts. The number may change if the hut classifications change. Cycling and mountain biking routes also wind through the mountain scenery of the Riedingtal, passing lakes and alpine huts.
A valley bus operates in the nature park during the main summer holiday season. Guests can use it for the return journey after hut-to-hut hikes. Check the operating dates before your trip if you plan to include the bus in your itinerary.
Mills and historical sites
The Mill Trail starts in the village of Zederhaus. It is a circular hiking trail that takes about 1.5 hours and has five mill-themed stations. In the Graben area, four of the nine former mills have been renovated and house the “Mill Life” exhibition. Together, the trail and exhibition offer different ways to explore the history of milling. For planning purposes, you can compare the approximate duration of the Mill Trail with that of the circular trail by Schlierersee: the two times differ by about half an hour.
Another historical site is the “Maurergut” heritage farm in Zederhaus. It is a typical Lungau single farmstead dating back to the late Middle Ages. The Zederhaus Prangstangen, meanwhile, are wooden poles wrapped in thousands of alpine and meadow flowers; they can be up to eight metres high.
Hubertus Chapel is located along both of the circular hiking trails described above. The Hubertus Mass is held in the chapel every year at the end of September. Check the date before your trip if you would like to plan around this event.
