Sankt Gilgen’s cultural history can be explored through several different themes: churches and a courthouse tell the story of architecture and local history, two museums focus on distinct subjects, and two routes offer insights into history, natural phenomena and traditional lore. When planning your trip, you can decide early on whether you are more interested in sacred architecture, music, painting or themed stops along the way. The distinctions below can help you choose activities that match your interests.

Churches and Historic Buildings

The first church in Sankt Gilgen was built around 1300 and dedicated to Saint Giles. The parish church in Sankt Gilgen is also dedicated to Saint Giles. Its tower took on its present form between 1705 and 1728; the parish church itself was completely renovated from 1767 to 1769. These dates describe different construction projects: the tower’s appearance and the complete renovation of the church.

Another historical landmark is the courthouse built in Sankt Gilgen between 1719 and 1720. It was the birthplace of Anna Maria Walburga, the mother of W. A. Mozart, who was born on 25 December 1720. The Mozart House in Sankt Gilgen is protected as a historic monument under a decision pursuant to Section 3; the monument listing is dated 30 June 2025. The history of church architecture, a biographical connection to the Mozart family and the Mozart House’s protected status thus stand alongside one another as distinct facets of local history.

Museums: Instruments and the Artists’ Colony

The Museum of Musical Instruments of the Peoples has a collection of more than 6,000 musical instruments from around the world. Some of the instruments are demonstrated to visitors. The collection therefore represents not only a wide variety of instruments, but also includes demonstrations featuring selected pieces.

The Zinkenbach Artists’ Colony Museum in Sankt Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang focuses on the lives and work of artists who spent their summer holidays at the Adambauer farm in Zinkenbach during the interwar period. Each year, the museum displays works from its own collection as well as loans from museums and private collections; the exhibitions vary. If you would like to see a specific exhibition, check the dates and program in advance.

The museums have different focuses: one is devoted to musical instruments and demonstrations, while the other explores the artists’ colony and its changing exhibitions. When planning your visit, you can choose according to whether you are more interested in instruments or the art history of the interwar period.

Pilgrims’ Way and Zwölferhorn

The historic Pilgrims’ Way runs from Sankt Gilgen to Sankt Wolfgang and features 24 signposted points of interest. The Pillstein Panorama Circular Trail on the Zwölferhorn has a different focus: its twelve stops explain natural phenomena and traditional lore. The routes therefore differ both in their destinations and in the topics covered along the way.

If the historic pilgrimage route and its connection between Sankt Gilgen and Sankt Wolfgang are your priority, the Pilgrims’ Way offers a clear link between these two places. If you are interested in natural phenomena and traditional lore, the stops on the Pillstein Panorama Circular Trail provide a thematic framework. The number of stops is a feature of each route, not an indication of how long a visit takes.

The Zwölferhorn, 1,522 metres high and above Sankt Gilgen, can be reached in eleven minutes by the Zwölferhorn cable car. Timetables may change, so check the latest schedule before planning an excursion around the journey.
