Thalgau: Hiking, Culture and Hotels
Accommodation in Thalgau
Thalgau is located on Lake Fuschl. When planning a stay, outdoor activities and local history can be considered separately by looking at specific destinations: the Achen Circular Trail offers a short walk with an approximate duration, while the church, museum and House of History offer different points of interest. Which combination you choose depends on how much time you want to set aside for walks and local history.
Hiking and Cycling
The Achen Circular Trail (No. 16) in Thalgau is an easy walking and hiking route covering 1.5 kilometres; it takes about one hour. The Lake Fuschl Circular Trail (No. 30) is 12 kilometres long, moderately difficult and takes three hours. This gives you a choice between an easy route of about one hour and a moderately difficult hike lasting three hours—a practical comparison for planning your day. Route information may be affected by local trail conditions; check these before setting out.
If you want to focus your stay on cycling, you can consider the Salzkammergut Cycle Route, which passes through Thalgau. This route can therefore be included in your plans separately from the information about the two hiking routes.
Church, Local History and the Koloman Tradition
Thalgau Parish Church is a Baroque hall church, built between 1745 and 1755, and has largely preserved its Baroque furnishings. The term “hall church” describes a layout in which the nave and aisles are approximately the same height. This provides a way to understand the church’s spatial design as well as when it was built.
The House of History in Thalgau documents the history of the village and presents it in an engaging way. A museum at the Hundsmarktmühle hosts changing special exhibitions every year on local history and rural life in earlier times. The focus is therefore both on the village’s history and on changing exhibition themes, including the way of life in earlier times.
The Kolomansberg Church, Austria’s oldest wooden church, stands north of Thalgau at the summit of Kolomansberg. The Kolomannsbründl is a widely known sacred spring site on Kolomannsberg and is associated with the Koloman tradition. The church’s building history and religious traditions offer different perspectives on cultural history.
Swimming and Climbing
Thalaguna outdoor pool has a natural pool, a heated pool and a pool for toddlers. The climbing wall at Ferdinand-Zuckerstätter-Straße 22, 5303 Thalgau, opened in 2010. It is 6.50 metres high, has 58 m² of climbing area and offers 12 routes graded II to VII. With this facility, you can consider its height, area and range of routes together.
