Local history between church and chapel
Elixhausen received a small church in 1168/1175, dedicated to Saints Bartholomew and Vitus; the parish responsible for it was Bergheim. Around 1516/1517, the Church of St. Bartholomew and St. Vitus was enlarged, and its Gothic tower has survived to this day.
The Honterus Church in Elixhausen-Sachsenheim was consecrated on Sunday, 24 September 1961, and named after the Transylvanian reformer Johannes Honterus. Its organ has a history of its own: it was built in 1881 and brought to Elixhausen from the Protestant Church in Bad Reichenhall in 1962.
The Dreibrüder Chapel was built in 1773 and commemorates a settled inheritance dispute in the Rehlingen household. Its Baroque design is described in detail: the masonry three-sided pillar supports a pyramid-shaped shingle roof; niches contain oil paintings on sheet metal. Ursprung Castle adds another architectural landmark. The small Baroque castle is used by the school administration. According to the Federal Monuments Authority’s register entry of 30 June 2025, it is protected as a listed monument under an ordinance.
Outdoor activities and an excursion to Lake Ragginger
The routes in the Elixhausen Activity Arena have been measured using GPS. Consistent signage with kilometre markers and directional signs helps with navigation; the routes vary in length and difficulty, from options for beginners to trails for experts. This gives you a choice of different running and walking routes, without assuming that everyone is at the same level.
The hike to Lake Ragginger starts in Elixhausen and runs via Weichenberg and Ehrengraben. The route is approximately 3 km long and takes around 50 minutes. Lake Ragginger is an excursion destination in a protected landscape area, popular with cyclists and a place for long walks. The route is described as unsuitable for pushchairs; check the latest access information before setting out.
There are also activities around Elixhausen in winter: winter walks and snowshoe tours offer a chance to get active in the snow. Alongside the Activity Arena routes, these provide seasonal options to choose from.
