Hintersee: Lakeside Paths, Hiking and Joseph Mohr
Accommodation in Hintersee
Hintersee brings together lakeside paths, places associated with Joseph Mohr and opportunities to explore the mountains of the Osterhorn Group. To plan your stay, you can first consider which themes you would like to shape it: nature and the lake’s history along a lakeside path, Joseph Mohr’s work in the community, or seasonal mountain tours. The paths and sights offer different ways to explore these themes.
Circular Routes by the Lake and Through the Forest
The five-kilometre Hintersee circular hiking trail runs along undeveloped, freely accessible sections of the shore. Information boards along the trail provide information about the wildlife and plant life, as well as the lake’s history. The route thus combines exercise with topics directly related to the surrounding area. If you enjoy learning about the landscape as you walk, the boards offer an additional point of orientation along the way.
The WaldWasserZauberweg consists of the Waldzauber Hintersee and the Wasserwunder Tiefenbach. Waldzauber Hintersee is a fully signposted circular trail that starts right in Hintersee. The names distinguish the overall attraction from a specific circular route. When planning this trail, both its circular layout and its starting point in Hintersee are useful; the continuous signage is another feature.
Joseph Mohr in Hintersee
Joseph Mohr lived and worked in the municipality of Hintersee from 1827 to 1837. The Joseph Mohr Chapel was built in 2016 as a memorial to him. Inside is a panoramic painting by Hintersee artist Bernd Horak. The Joseph Mohr heritage in Hintersee also includes the parish church, Joseph Mohr’s priestly vestments and several original exhibits from his time as a priest.
The approximately 1.2-kilometre Joseph Mohr Memorial Trail is easy to walk and takes about 45 minutes. Along the way, it passes six more informative Joseph Mohr stations. The trail therefore focuses on a historical figure: while the information boards by the lake cover its wildlife and plant life as well as its history, the memorial trail centres on Joseph Mohr and his time in the municipality.
Hiking and Winter Tours
The mountain scenery of the Osterhorn Group around Hintersee offers outings ranging from leisurely hikes to alpine pastures to challenging high-altitude tours. The right tour also depends on the season. One winter option is the ski route from Hintersee to Anzenberghöhe: it is about three kilometres long and partially groomed; grooming is carried out as needed. Anzenberghöhe is at an elevation of 1,469 metres, with 716 metres of elevation gain from the valley.
The fee-based Faistenau-Hintersee cross-country ski trail is a separate option. Tickets are available at the tourist offices in Faistenau and Hintersee; check the ticket requirements before setting out. This makes the two winter activities easy to distinguish: for the ski route, the destination elevation, length and ascent are useful points of reference, while fees and ticket purchases are relevant for the cross-country ski trail.
Planning Your Stay
The different trail lengths and themes can help you plan your days around your interests. The Joseph Mohr Memorial Trail combines a short route with an approximate walking time and several stations. At five kilometres, the lakeside circular trail is longer and combines sections of shoreline with information about the lake’s nature and history. If you want to focus your stay more on the mountains, you can choose between leisurely hikes to alpine pastures, challenging high-altitude tours and the seasonal ski route. When looking for a hotel in Hintersee, you can use these trip ideas as a starting point for your plans.
