Waidhofen an der Ybbs: Townscape and Cultural Experiences
Accommodation in Waidhofen an der Ybbs
Waidhofen an der Ybbs developed on a sheltered rocky spur at the confluence of the Ybbs and Schwarzbach rivers. Its late medieval townscape is remarkably cohesive; the uniform architecture of the town centre combines traditional building styles with influences from Italy. The defensive moat, towers, gate and castle each tell their own chapter of the town’s history.
Town History Between Towers and Castle
A defensive moat once ran along the town wall. Three large towers served as watchtowers and have survived to this day. The Ybbs Gate is the only surviving gate of the town’s former gates. Behind the parish church, the round tower was also part of the fortifications: it once housed the town’s arsenal, where weapons were stored to defend the town.
Rothschild Castle stands in the heart of Waidhofen an der Ybbs. Today, it serves as a venue for weddings, celebrations, cultural events, seminars and other occasions. A guided tour offers insights into the castle’s history and that of its owners, residents and users. Climbing the castle tower means ascending more than 100 steps, with views across the whole town as your reward.
Museum, Hydropower and Culture
The 5 Elements Museum explores the history of Waidhofen an der Ybbs and the region as a pre-modern industrial landscape shaped by ironworking. Modern interactive displays, historical insights and playful experiments make the exhibition an engaging experience for visitors of all ages. Tours can also be booked outside opening hours by prior arrangement.
The exhibition “From Waterwheel to Turbine” traces the development of hydropower in Waidhofen and presents historical types of turbines, including a Kaplan turbine. Tours of the Schwellöd demonstration power station explain the development of energy generation on and with the Ybbs. The Waidhofen Film Theatre offers a different cultural experience, with a curated programme of films outside the mainstream.
A visit to the museum can also be combined with a trip to the Schwarzbach area: it is free to access via the information point during the 5 Elements Museum’s opening hours. A picnic in the area includes a gourmet basket filled with food from Hartner Bakery.
Exploring on Foot and by Bike
The Ybbs Riverside Trail begins at Ybbs Tower and follows the Ybbs on a walking route. The Panoramic Heights Trail offers selected cycling and hiking routes with picnic spots along the way and is known for its magnificent views. Alongside the historic town centre, tours and outdoor experiences are therefore a key part of planning a trip.
The central section of the Ybbstal Cycle Path between Waidhofen an der Ybbs and Lunz am See is nearly flat and closed to motor traffic. Waidhofen is a popular starting point for the route; Ă–BB and Westbahn take travellers to the cycle path. The Radtramper bus runs daily between Waidhofen an der Ybbs and Lunz am See during the summer holidays. In May, June, September and October, it runs only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Check the operating days for your travel year if you plan to take the bus.
At Buchenberg Adventure Park, guided experiences include a programme about raccoons and donkey hikes. The donkey hikes introduce visitors to animal behaviour and habitats. The park is also home to raccoons and raccoon dogs, as well as lynx, wolves and wildcats. For archery, there are two 3D courses with around 50 stations in total.
Performance Seasons and Regional Cuisine
The Waidhofen People’s Theatre stages the Castle Courtyard Plays every July and also presents a children’s production each spring. The Advent Market at Rothschild Castle takes place every year on the second weekend of Advent. Check the market dates for your stay if you would like to plan your trip around it.
Waidhofen’s culinary specialities include Ybbs Valley trout, organic Mostviertel beef and Mostschober, a pastry made with cider. These local specialities add a taste of the region to the town’s history, exhibitions, theatre programme and outdoor activities.
