Gmünd: Nature Parks, Culture and Observatory
Accommodation in Gmünd
The Gmünd district offers a range of themes to consider when planning a trip: from granite landscapes and moors to historic buildings, music, cycling and wellness. If you are looking for a hotel in Gmünd, these highlights can help you organize your interests for your stay. The nature parks offer specific opportunities to observe landscapes and nature; buildings and events add culture and history to the picture.
Nature parks: landscapes and observation
In Blockheide Nature Park, bizarre granite formations, quiet forests, gentle meadows, heathland, hidden forest ponds and natural stream valleys shape the landscape. The themed trails connect playgrounds with the 15th meridian east, a former water reservoir that now serves as an information center, and a 30-meter-high observation tower. Rare species such as marsh grasshoppers and common heather also find a habitat here. These different features make Blockheide a nature-focused destination where landscapes, navigation and individual stops come together.
Hochmoor Schrems Nature Park covers around 300 hectares. Of this area, 119 hectares are protected and form part of the Ramsar site “Waldviertel Ponds, Moors and Rivers.” Along the high moor hiking trail, you can observe moor frogs, dragonflies, sundews and bladderworts. Another way to explore the world of the Waldviertel’s ponds and moors is the UnterWasserReich, which features an interactive indoor exhibition and a water garden designed to blend with nature. The facility is accessible, offers information in English, German and Czech, and is suitable for a rainy day.
Buildings, history and music
Ehrendorf Castle has a history spanning almost 600 years and was first mentioned in a document in 1427. Kirchberg am Walde Castle offers a different architectural perspective, with a medieval core and Baroque-Early Neoclassical design. At Rauenstein Fortress, some of the wall elements date from the 13th century; it was once a defensive structure. Together, the three buildings represent different historical contexts, from the earliest documentary record to medieval and later architectural periods.
Music is another cultural highlight. The Schrammel.Klang.Festival takes place at Lake Herrensee in Litschau. The program includes matinées, the Schrammel.Pfad, evening concerts and music workshops. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the dates for the relevant edition before planning your stay.
Observatory, hiking trails and golf
Höhenberg Observatory is located in a six-meter-high brick tower and is equipped with mostly historic telescopes. A short planetary hiking trail leads to the observatory, linking astronomy with a walking route. If you are interested in different types of hiking, Sankt Martin offers another specific option: a network of more than 70 kilometers of marked hiking trails runs through its wooded landscape.
In Haugschlag, the golf club has two 18-hole championship courses. Water, large granite blocks and heathland characterize the landscape described around the courses. The golf club also offers taster golf sessions and beginner courses. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on hiking trails, a specific sporting activity, or historical and astronomical themes.
Cycling trips and wellness
The Iron Curtain Trail – EuroVelo 13 starts in Gmünd and ends in Bratislava. The entire route is well signposted. The Waldviertelbahn is useful for combining train travel with cycling stages: bicycles can be transported free of charge, making it possible to combine train journeys with bike rides.
Sole Felsen Bad and Sole Felsen Sauna offer different wellness experiences. The baths have warm pools, some enriched with Bad Ischl healing brine, as well as bubbling attractions, massage jets and a current channel. The sauna area includes various saunas, a steam grotto, a rock hammam and an extensive sauna garden on Asang Pond. These are two distinct types of water and sauna experiences, rather than interchangeable offerings.
