When looking for a hotel in Gmünd, you can start by considering which themes you would like to shape your stay: city history and museums, trails through natural landscapes and pond areas, or swimming and sauna facilities. Gmünd brings together these different highlights. The specific buildings, collections and leisure activities can help you plan your trip according to your interests.

Cityscape and history

Gmünd Castle is considered the oldest building in the city. The three-storey, four-wing structure has a gate tower, a southwestern keep and a southwestern chapel tower. St. Stephen’s Parish Church is also a prominent building: it is a Gothic, three-aisled church with a gabled roof and a west tower. Gmünd Castle Park is home to botanical rarities such as paper birches, copper beeches and North American cucumber magnolias.

Two sgraffito houses dating from the 16th century stand in the town square; the entire square is now a protected historic zone. Gmünd City Museum is located in the Old Town Hall, which also dates from the 16th century. A film shown there covers the division of the city after the First World War and the creation of Gmünd-Neustadt. The House of Contemporary Gmünd History focuses on the Gmünd refugee camp and the development of the border and the region along the Iron Curtain.

Various institutions offer further insights into regional history and crafts. The Glass and Stone Museum documents the former leading economic sectors of glass and stone in the Upper Waldviertel. The “Old Blacksmith and Wagon Workshop” Museum is housed in one of Gmünd’s oldest buildings. On selected dates in summer, you can experience traditional blacksmithing there during live demonstrations; check in advance whether a demonstration is scheduled. At the Burger Glass Studio, colorful glass objects are made entirely by hand, and every piece is unique. The 1st Waldviertel Children’s Workshop offers craft workshops for children aged four and up.

Nature, trails and wildlife watching

Granite natural monuments and balancing rocks define the landscape of Blockheide Nature Park. Named formations include Devil’s Bed, Devil’s Loaf, the Cricket Stones and the Goblin Stones. Four themed circular trails start at the information center. The Gmünd Pond Chain Trail offers a different perspective on the landscape: it connects ten natural ponds, most fringed by reed beds, and is lined with old oak trees. When planning, you can therefore choose between a network of circular trails and a route alongside several bodies of water, without needing to assume a particular walking time.

The Lainsitz Floodplain Nature Reserve lies between Gmünd and the Czech border. Species-rich riverside pastures and flood meadows characterize this landscape. The water buffalo pasture covers around 12 hectares and is located close to the Lainsitz within the city limits of Gmünd. It is easy to reach via a central path and also has two viewing and information points. Separately, wildlife watching from the Lainsitz viewing platforms is seasonal: animals can be observed there from May to October. Check current conditions before visiting.

Swimming, saunas and getting there

Gmünd lido is a natural swimming pond of around seven hectares with a sandy beach. Facilities include a ball games court and rental of parasols, loungers, volleyballs and badminton sets. Facilities and rental options may change seasonally; check the latest information before your visit. Sole Felsen Welt offers a different experience: the swimming, sauna and thermal spa complex includes relaxation and sports pools, a giant slide and a children’s splash area. The sauna facilities include guided infusions, the Achat, Zirben, Kristall and Wald saunas, a steam bath, a rock hamam, a sauna relaxation lagoon and a natural lake.

You can also plan your journey using specific train connections. The Franz-Josefs-Bahn offers direct rail travel from Vienna to Gmünd station. The historic Waldviertel Railway runs between Gmünd and Groß Gerungs, as well as between Gmünd and Litschau. It’s a good idea to check the current timetable for your travel dates. For cyclists, the Iron Curtain Trail also begins in Gmünd.
