Stollberg: Castle and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Stollberg
Discover Stollberg through its routes
Stollberg offers several named routes to help you plan your trip, each with different landmarks: a castle, a hut, an inn and a ridge hike with long-distance views. When choosing your destination, you can consider whether you prefer a specific endpoint, a stated timeframe, a distinctive route or scenic views. Each of the routes described has a different focus.
Stollberg Castle and named waypoints
The Natura Trail Hochwienerwald leads from Gern along the road to Stollberg Castle, hidden behind walls. The castle was built in 1560/70. If you are looking for a clearly named destination with a historical connection on your tour, this route offers both.
The Gföhlberg Achter follows the paved road uphill to Stollberg Castle and then continues about 500 m to the Gasthof Kreuzwirt inn. The “Großer Türkenstein Circular Trail” also uses the castle as a landmark: after the castle, it turns right onto Gföhlbergweg and descends via Stollberger-Anhöhe to the Gasthof Kreuzwirt inn. You can distinguish the two routes by their described sections: the Achter climbs the paved road to the castle, while the circular trail descends via the hill to the inn. Check local trail conditions before hiking.
A stated duration or long-distance views
The gentler hut trail from Stollberg to Gföhlberghütte takes about ¾ to 1¼ hours. This gives you an approximate timeframe for planning your day. The Gföhlberg Achter, by contrast, gives an approximate distance: from the castle to the Gasthof Kreuzwirt inn is about 500 m. Duration and route sections therefore provide different points of reference when comparing the trails as part of your plans.
The first stage of the Michelbacher Höhenweg starts at the Gasthof zum Kreuzwirt inn in Stollberg. The ridge hike along the Höhenweg from Stollberg offers panoramic views and long-distance vistas of the Gölsental valley and the foothills of the Alps. This provides both a named starting point for the stage and specific viewpoints to help you find your way. If the landscape is important to you, the Gölsental valley and the foothills of the Alps are clearly named directions to look out toward.
More trails and a cycling route
The Stössinger Hegerbergweg also passes through Stollberg, as well as Goin and Hochstrass. The stp Route #10 Region Elsbeere Wienerwald also passes through the town and is a cycling route. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between the named hiking trails and a regional cycling route without treating them as the same activity.
If you are considering Stollberg as a destination for a hotel stay, the hiking and cycling routes mentioned may factor into your choice. You can then select specific accommodation based on your own requirements.
