Altlengbach: Cultural History, Hiking Trails and Outdoor Pool
Accommodation in Altlengbach
Those considering a stay in Altlengbach will find several options to shape their day: historic buildings, hiking trails, the outdoor pool and the municipality’s natural areas. The topics range from the layout of a castle complex to practical details about a cultural hiking trail. This will help you decide whether cultural history, exercise, swimming or nature should be the focus of your trip.
Castle Ruins, Parish Church and Chapel
The Altlengbach castle ruins consist of an upper castle and an outer bailey in front of it. The upper castle is almost square in plan and stands on an earthen mound. To the east, about six metres lower, is the outer bailey, arranged around a rectangular courtyard. The layout of the complex thus comprises two areas with different designs.
The castle was built around 1400 by the Fallbachers of Loosdorf. It was destroyed during the Ottoman siege and never rebuilt. The parish church and rectory are also linked to the old castle: both were established in 1192 in the former castle of the Lengenbach family. The parish church is dedicated to Simon and Jude. It was badly damaged during the Ottoman siege and rebuilt in 1695.
The Herrgottschmieden Chapel has its own historical connection: it dates back to the period following the second Ottoman siege in 1683. The listed chapel was moved about 35 metres in 2013, when the junction of Prinzbachstraße and Hauptstraße was completely redesigned. The castle ruins, church and chapel reflect different chapters of local history—from the Lengenbach family and the destruction of the castle to a change to the streetscape in 2013.
Hiking Trails and Cultural Heritage
The Altlengbach circular hiking trail passes through the Altlengbach district, the town centre and the surrounding countryside. There are fitness stations along the trail where you can do various exercises. In addition, three cultural hiking trails lead to a total of 15 historic and significant sights. When planning, you can therefore choose between a circular route through the town and countryside and trails focused on culture.
Cultural Hiking Trail 1, in the Altlengbach, Lengbachl and Steinhäusl area, is about 11.5 kilometres long and takes approximately three hours to walk. These approximate figures provide a practical indication of how much time to allow in your day’s plans. The municipality provides free hiking maps for visitors to take from the municipal office. If you would like to review your route in advance, the maps can help you find your way; the stated distance and walking time refer to Cultural Hiking Trail 1.
Outdoor Pool and Other Facilities
The Altlengbach outdoor pool has a large swimming pool with two small diving platforms. It also has a non-swimmer pool with a slide and a baby pool with a water mushroom and shade sail. The different pools and facilities give you a clear idea of what to expect if you are considering making the outdoor pool a focus of your stay.
The outdoor pool also has a freely accessible table tennis table, an adjacent playground and a multi-purpose sports court. In addition to the pools, there are opportunities to play table tennis, enjoy the playground and get active on the sports court.
Natural Areas and Regional Products
The municipality’s natural areas include meadows, pastures, forests and bodies of water. They feature special natural conservation values as well as selected plant and animal species. This diversity adds a look at habitats and nature in the municipality to the historical and active leisure options. If nature is important to your travel plans, you can consider it alongside the cultural trails and local history.
One specific example of regional produce is Bio-Obst Höllerer, which offers organically grown apples and pears. The farm shop invites you to sample the products; the selection available may change. Together with the cultural trails, castle complex and outdoor pool, this gives you a range of themes to help plan your stay in Altlengbach.
