Kasten bei Böheimkirchen lies among the gentle hills of the foothills of the Alps, at the foot of the Hegerberg. Marked hiking trails around the Hegerberg, cultural history, and local leisure activities highlight different aspects of the town. When planning your trip, it is worth looking at the specific features of the trails: they range from a tour with a stated distance and elevation gain to routes whose paths connect with church and local history.

Hiking around the Hegerberg

The Kastner Elsbeerweg is a moderately difficult hiking tour, 10.80 kilometers long, with 366 meters of elevation gain. It leads through forests and across meadows up to the Hegerberg. A number of service trees line the approximately five-kilometer stretch to the Johann Enzinger refuge. In this way, the route combines the landscape with the regional connection reflected in its name.

The moderately difficult Fahrafelder Kirchenweg also leads to the Hegerberg, but begins at Kasten parish church. The trail runs along forest and meadow paths away from settlements and roads. At the same time, it follows the route of the II. Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline and passes a restored wine cellar and a traditional drying house at Hummelberg. Compared with the Elsbeerweg, the starting point at the church and the cultural heritage of the stops along the way are particularly prominent here.

The municipal Steps Trail passes the sports facility, playground, soccer field, beach volleyball court, church, and cemetery. Its listed stops therefore include leisure and sports venues as well as local and church landmarks. The route offers a different perspective on Kasten than the hikes that lead to the Hegerberg.

The playground is directly adjacent to the sports ground, with its soccer and basketball courts, as well as the beach volleyball court. Play equipment includes two slides, a flying fox, a tunnel through an earth mound, and swings. Other equipment is designed for practicing balance and coordination.

Church and Local History

Kasten is believed to have originated as a church settlement in the 11th century. In 1265, the town was granted its own parish. The Catholic parish church of St. Mauritius in Kasten is protected as a historic monument by decree. As the starting point of the Fahrafelder Kirchenweg, the parish church also provides a link for a tour through local and cultural history.

Food and Further Activities

Local dining includes both traditional fare and exquisite dishes. Viticulture also has a long history: it can be traced back to the 17th century in the valley of Kasten, and even to the 18th century at Hummelberg. The dates therefore differ between the valley and Hummelberg. Visitors interested in the town’s cultural character will find a connection here between the landscape and regional history that extends beyond the history of the church and trails.

Those interested in equestrian sports can pursue their hobby in the municipality of Kasten; anglers can also pursue their hobby there.
