Rafing lies on a gently sloping plain in the Eggenburg Bay along the Talbach, which is a right-bank tributary of the Pulkau. The landscape, local history and routes offer different starting points for planning a trip. The Schneebergblick viewpoint, several historic chapels, cycling connections and the village wine tavern each offer a different focus. Before looking for a hotel, you can decide whether views, cultural history or a cycling tour should shape your stay.

Landscape and Views

The Schneebergblick Rafing viewpoint offers views of the surrounding landscape. You can reach the viewpoint by train, car, bicycle or on foot; an easy-going path leads there from Pulkauer BrĂĽndl. In fine weather, the unobstructed view extends as far as the Schneeberg in southern Lower Austria. The viewpoint therefore offers two kinds of vistas: views of the surrounding area and, when the weather permits, distant views as far as the Schneeberg. If these views are important to you, you can take the weather caveat into account when planning.

Cycling Paths and Routes Through Rafing

Several connections to Rafing are noted for route planning. The Rafing village wine tavern is on the DAC cycling route. A regional cycling connection follows the WEINVIERTEL DAC cycling route north to Groß Reipersdorf and Rafing, then continues towards Pulkau. Both a direction and places along the route are specified here. In addition, the Maria Dreieichen–Marianka north route passes through Rafing as stop 47. These route details provide different reference points: the location of the village wine tavern along a route, the stated course of the regional cycling connection, and a stop number on the north route.

Village History and Chapels

The medieval village of “Revinga” was established in the 12th century in the domain of the Counts of Hardegg. Another historical period is linked to Zwettl Abbey: in 1284, its monks built a large farmstead with a Gothic chapel on the northwestern edge of Rafing. Today, the grounds of the former Zwettl farmstead are home to a sculptor’s studio and a restored, secularized chapel. The site’s former monastic history and its present-day artistic use sit side by side.

The Chapel of St John the Baptist in Rafing has a different architectural character. It is Neoclassical, dates from the first third of the 19th century and features a statue of the Virgin Mary on its façade. The two chapel descriptions offer different ways into the village’s history: the former Zwettl farmstead points to a medieval estate, while St John the Baptist is associated with Neoclassical architecture and its façade design. Those interested in cultural history can therefore explore Rafing through more than one period.

Village Wine Tavern and Practical Information

The Rafing village wine tavern combines its connection to the cycling route with a specific offering on site. It has approximately 100 indoor seats and around 50 outdoor seats. It serves hot and cold dishes as well as regional and seasonal specialties, including spare ribs and homemade pastries. The approximate seating figures clearly distinguish between the indoor and outdoor areas; the food selection ranges from hot dishes to pastries.

Facilities also include a playground, a children’s play area, children’s meals, high chairs and a baby-changing room. If you are travelling with children, you can take these specific facilities into account when planning. Bus groups are welcome by prior arrangement. For group travel, making a reservation in advance is therefore part of the preparations. Overall, the viewpoint, historic buildings, cycling connections and village wine tavern offer different highlights to help you decide what you want to focus on during your trip to Rafing.
