Discover Tattendorf: Wine, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Tattendorf
Tattendorf combines a long tradition of winegrowing with trails through floodplain forests, vineyards and fields, as well as sites of cultural and historical interest. The St. Laurent Wine Trail is around two kilometres long, accessible to all and offers insights into the region’s winegrowing at eight experience stops.
Winegrowing and Regional Traditions
Wine has been grown in Tattendorf since 1256. The St. Laurent Wine Trail explores the subject from a regional perspective, while the year marks the roots of the local tradition. Tattendorf’s wine harvest festival has been held every year for more than 100 years. At the Tattendorf Großheuriger, you can enjoy top wines from the Thermenregion and hearty specialities from local vintners. If you would like to attend the festival, check the dates before your trip.
Trails Through Floodplain Forests and Wine Country
You can explore the Triesting floodplain forest on walks from Tattendorf. The EuroVelo 9a route passes through the Tattendorf Triesting floodplain forests; hikes through vineyards and fields are also possible on well-maintained paths in and around Tattendorf. The options vary by mode of travel and landscape: walking and hiking on foot are complemented by a cycling route through the floodplains.
The Ried “Rohrlüsse” area lies within the municipality of Tattendorf and comprises valuable wetland habitats, as well as dry hedgerow and meadowland. These varied habitats provide a home for endangered bird species today, and the area is also rich in plant life. In summer, Schubert Park in Tattendorf offers a shady place to take a break.
Architectural History and Culture
Tattendorf railway station underwent a faithful restoration in 1985. Noteworthy features include the water tower and the pumping system that supplied steam locomotives with water. The religious buildings also showcase different architectural styles: the parish church of Heilige Maria im Elend is a Baroque hall church with a Gothic choir, while the Nepomuk Chapel is a simple Baroque wayside chapel. It was built in 1728 and contains a statue of the saint.
Museum and Mill Programme
The mill at the “In der Mühle” winery in Tattendorf is now a museum and hosts events such as gallery openings, exhibitions and concerts. Tours of the mill can be booked by phone; school and children’s groups are especially welcome. The “School on the Farm” experience lets children grind grain and prepare something with it. The mill programme therefore offers both cultural events and a hands-on activity for children.
More Activities
Tattendorf’s climbing park features 64 obstacles across six courses. DINO Tattendorf displays 60 life-size dinosaurs across more than one hectare in the historic Dumba Park. Schmetterlingwelt Tattendorf is a greenhouse filled with tropical plants, where more than 500 unusual butterflies fly freely. Each of the three attractions has its own focus: courses and obstacles, dinosaurs, and tropical plants with free-flying butterflies.
