Neuhaus: Castle, Art and Nature
Accommodation in Neuhaus
Neuhaus offers several specific starting points for planning a stay: castle and church history, contemporary art, and cycling and hiking trails. Which focus you choose depends on whether you want to center your visit on historic buildings, the Atelier Bajadere program, or a route through the landscape.
Neuhaus Castle: History and Church
The castle, or fortified house, from which the name Neuhaus derives is documented in records dating to around 1249. In 1694, two Venetians established a mirror factory in the castle. These milestones show different aspects of the town’s history: its early mention in connection with the name and a later, specific use of the castle.
Neuhaus Parish Church is part of the castle complex. It was built in 1610–1612 as a Protestant Church of the Redeemer with a family crypt. The well-known VIA SACRA pilgrimage route from Vienna to Mariazell also passes by the parish church. The building thus brings together its connection to the castle complex and its place on a pilgrimage route.
The renovated Neuhaus Castle in the Neuhaus district is a visitor attraction worth seeing. Guided tours of Neuhaus Castle are available by prior arrangement for groups of five or more on the first Sunday of each month at 10 a.m. If you plan to join a tour, confirm your booking in advance, as arrangements may change.
The Neuhaus Castle event center includes the renovated main castle as well as the rose garden, parish hall, castle terrace, castle hall and “Gwölb.” If an event is the reason for your trip, this full range of spaces—not just the main building—is part of what the event center offers.
Contemporary Art at Atelier Bajadere
Founded in 2013, Atelier Bajadere is a gallery dedicated to presenting and promoting contemporary visual art, with a focus on painting. Its program includes ten to twelve exhibitions each year. Unlike the castle and parish church, the focus here is on engaging with contemporary art.
From May to October, sculptures are also displayed in the atelier’s outdoor grounds. This outdoor exhibition is explicitly seasonal; if it matters to your stay, check what is currently on display before you travel. The annual exhibition program and the time-limited outdoor display offer two distinct points to consider when planning.
Pond, Cycle Path and Hiking Trails
Neuhaus Pond was designated a natural monument in 1987. During renovations in 2000–2001, a shallow-water zone was created, among other measures; steps were also taken to improve water quality and make the pond more attractive to visitors seeking recreation. The pond’s protected status and the later improvements related to recreation are two distinct aspects to consider.
The cycle path from Neuhaus to Weissenbach is mostly flat and connects in Weissenbach to cycle routes toward Kaumberg–Hainfeld and Berndorf–Leobersdorf. Check onward connections before setting out. The Great Peilstein Loop via Hafnerberg is described differently: its descent to Neuhaus alternates between several meadows and wooded sections. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before hiking.
The routes offer different points of reference when choosing: for the cycle path, these are its mostly flat profile and the connections in Weissenbach; for the Peilstein Loop, they are the alternating meadows and wooded sections on the descent. Neuhaus Forest School can be reached on foot from Neuhaus Castle and offers another specific connection to a walking route.
