Cycling routes, local history and a museum dedicated to the history of lighting are among the different highlights of a stay in Leobersdorf. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether cycling or cultural history is more important for your trip. The local routes and attractions offer practical guidance.

Cycling and routes in Leobersdorf

The Triesting-Gölsental Cycle Route begins in Leobersdorf and runs along the Triesting. It passes directly by Leobersdorf railway station, making it easy to reach by public transport. The Leobersdorf Family Loop also starts and ends at the station, and passes the pump track and Generations Park. The two routes therefore differ in the features they include: one runs along the Triesting, while the other incorporates the pump track and Generations Park into its route.

The pump track covers an area of around 1,300 square metres, of which approximately 545 square metres are paved riding surface. These figures distinguish the total area from the paved section. The Dornau Loop also has its own distinct landscape: it passes through tranquil floodplain forest to the Wiener Neustadt Canal and the EuroVelo 9 route alongside it.

Exercise and nature

For jogging or walking, Bewegungs.reich offers four well-marked routes. They start at the route information board in Rathausplatz. You can choose from the four signposted options and use the starting point to orient yourself.

The Dornau Loop takes in floodplain forest, the canal and the EuroVelo 9 route alongside it. Together with the routes offered by Bewegungs.reich, the options range from paths with a designated starting point in town to a loop whose description highlights the landscape along the canal.

Local history and historic traces

The Parish Church of St Martin in Leobersdorf is a late Baroque hall church that was remodelled in 1775. The oldest part of Leobersdorf lies in the area around the church. Roman finds in this area support the interpretation that the church was, in all likelihood, a Roman watchtower. The finds provide a historical connection to the town’s past, expressed in explicitly cautious terms.

Traces of historic settlement can still be seen in Mariazellergasse today. Many houses have the floor plan of Franconian row farmsteads. The Federal Monuments Office describes the Halterhaus as important to local history. These examples point to different aspects of the townscape: settlement traces along a street and the significance of an individual house.

The Avar burial ground in Leobersdorf contains the remains of 171 individuals. Its analysis refined our understanding of changes in fashion and, in turn, the chronology of the Avars. It also made a significant contribution to further Avar research. The site thus connects tangible archaeological remains with insights into historical chronology.

South of Leobersdorf, on the road to Sollenau, lies the Heilsamer Brunnen, a pilgrimage site of regional importance. The spring was first mentioned in 1466 in the Urbarium of Christoph von Spaur as “Heylige Prunn”. On St Florian’s Day, 4 May, the spring was the destination of annual intercessory processions. The first mention of the spring and the procession tradition are two distinct historical references to the site.

Museums and cultural themes

At LEUM, the history of light—from pine splints to LEDs—is brought to life. Interactive texts and films, as well as touch-and-smell stations, engage sight, hearing, smell and touch. LEUM offers group tours and special visits for school classes by arrangement; please confirm your appointment before travelling.

The museum at the KunstmĂĽhle Dornau displays historical views of the mill, work tools and old signs. A 2019 article reported on the Blaumalerinnen, who had revived an old tradition and painted ceramic jugs using original patterns. The two topics offer different insights: the museum focuses on the mill and its work implements, while the Blaumalerinnen centred on ceramic patterns and craftsmanship.

Practical information and local cuisine

There is a free large car park for Generations Park at the event centre at Färbergasse 9. From there, the park is a five-minute walk along the shaded Triesting cycle path. Check the parking arrangements before setting off, as they may change.

The MĂĽhlsteinstube serves local fish sourced exclusively from Gut Dornau. The fish is prepared either on the griddle or in the oven. If you are considering local cuisine, this specifies both where the fish comes from and the choice of two cooking methods.
