If you are looking for a hotel in Sappl, the hiking, pilgrimage and cycling routes described here offer concrete starting points for planning your trip. The routes differ in their surroundings, their named destinations along the way, and whether Sappl is their starting point or a stop along a longer route.

Hiking trails with different routes

The Wilder Mann circular trail starts at the Maria Schnee pilgrimage church in Matzelsdorf, passes the Wilder Mann Stein viewpoint on its way to Sappl, and returns to Matzelsdorf. The Hemma Pilgrimage Trail features different details: it passes through Sappl and alternates between shady forest paths, meadows and fields. You can distinguish between the trails based on the features described: one route includes the church, viewpoint and return to Matzelsdorf, while the other alternates between the named landscape sections.

The Gauglerhof-Jufen-Granattor route reaches Sappl via a small meadow path. From the village, it climbs along a winding paved road towards the Lammersdorfer Hütte and Jufen-Kreutz. The descent is described as passing via the Lammersdorfer Hütte, Leitsbergalm and Ambroshütte in the direction of Sappl. The ascent and descent can therefore be distinguished by their different sections; the named huts and Jufenhöhe provide specific reference points along the route.

Understanding distances and time estimates

The Wilder Mann circular trail is listed as 3.77 kilometres long and taking about 1.1 hours. A different distance and time estimate applies to the first stage of the Hemma Pilgrimage Trail from Millstatt to Bad Kleinkirchheim: it first passes through Sappl, and Matzelsdorf is reached after 8 kilometres, or about 2.5 hours. These figures refer to different sections of the routes: a circular trail starting in Matzelsdorf and the distance to Matzelsdorf along the first stage. Bear this distinction in mind when comparing the time estimates for planning your hikes.

The organic autumn hike at Lake Millstatt also includes Sappl as part of a longer route. After Görtschach, Sappl and Matzelsdorf, the route descends to Lake Millstatt and then returns to its starting point in Millstatt. Here, Sappl is one of several places on a tour that begins and ends in Millstatt. For orientation, consider not only the section through Sappl but also the onward route to the lake and back.

Pilgrimage traditions and a cycling route

For more than three decades, the Fatima pilgrimage has been an established part of Christian life in the Oberkärnten region. A description from 2023 locates its starting point in Sappl, at the turn-off to Matzelsdorf: along the half-hour route, participants pray the rosary together, followed by a pilgrimage service at a branch church of the Obermillstatt parish. The itinerary described thus combines the walk with the service.

A regional cycling tour also passes through Sappl: the Millstatt–Seeboden–Döbriach–Hochplateau tour follows the Obermillstätter Landesstraße to Sappl, then continues on Route No. 65 towards Starfach and Döbriach. The route description names two successive sections: first, the country road to Sappl, then the continuation along Route No. 65. Together with the hiking and pilgrimage trails, this gives a concrete picture of how the village is connected to different routes.
