Seeboden offers several different ways to plan your stay: Lake Millstatt, nature trails and cultural themes. At the lake, there are both public access points and routes with named features along the way. There are also activities focused on wildlife and plant life, history and art.

Lake Millstatt and Lakeside Routes

Klauberpark provides public access to Lake Millstatt. Guests can fish in the lake from the shore or from a boat. Another way to take in the lakeside landscape is the 4.4 km SĂĽdufer Slow Trail: it runs from Seeboden to the place known as Wallreitereck, passing hidden coves and sandy beaches along the way. This distinguishes public access to the lake from a route with named features along the shore.

The Waterfowl Trail between Seeboden and Millstatt follows a cycling and walking route along the B98. Mute swans and goosanders breed on Lake Millstatt. Swans nest by the shore, while goosanders are cavity nesters; the species’ status can vary seasonally.

Nature Trails and Mountain Orientation

The nature trail on Lurnbichl focuses on both sensory experiences and the diversity of flora and fauna around the market town of Seeboden on Lake Millstatt. The nature experience engages sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. The barefoot trail uses different grades of grit, stones and sand, as well as clay, earth, marble, wood and bark mulch as sensory surfaces. The trail therefore invites visitors not only to observe nature, but also to experience a variety of tactile surfaces.

The Birds of the Alps nature trail provides information on the hunting techniques and way of life of Alpine birds, as well as their ecological role and the protection of their habitats. On Sommeregg Alm, each trail features 13 detailed information panels with QR codes. The mushroom trail in Seeboden explores a different subject: it is about one kilometre long and starts near the branch church of St. Wolfsberg.

Tschiernock is also a prominent reference point for geographical orientation. At 2,082 m, the mountain is Seeboden’s local mountain and lies at the southwestern end of the Nock Mountains.

Castle, Bonsai and Culture

Sommeregg Castle above Seeboden dates back to the 12th century. The castle houses the Torture Museum, considered the largest torture museum in Central Europe, with more than 100 faithful reproductions on display. The castle and museum thus offer two distinct reasons to visit: the history of the building and the exhibition inside.

The Bonsai Museum features Zen gardens designed in the style of classical Japanese models across more than 15,000 m² of exhibition and garden space. Around 3,000 bonsai trees in 120 different varieties and forms are on display; many of the exhibits are more than 100 years old. The scale of the collection and the great age of many of its specimens are distinctive aspects of a visit to the museum, while the Zen gardens offer another perspective on design inspired by classical Japanese models.

“Art Along the Way” takes visitors through Seeboden to sculptures by Otto Eder. A museum explores distinctive aspects of fishing and offers insights into the underwater world of Lake Millstatt. Each of these cultural themes has its own focus—from sculptures around town to fishing and the lake’s underwater world.
