Teuchl: Views and Mining History
Accommodation in Teuchl
If you would like to consider the surroundings when choosing a hotel, Teuchl offers several specific themes to help you plan: the summit area of the Teuchlspitz, a hiking route to the Materle Larch, a mountain bike tour, as well as church architecture and traces of former silver mining. You can decide whether views and nature, a cycling route, or historical connections are more important for your trip. The places and trails each offer a different focus.
Teuchlspitz: Views, Hiking Route, and Chapel
The Teuchlspitz is a secluded peak in the Kreuzeck Group and a viewpoint in the Mölltal. From there, you can enjoy far-reaching views of the Tauern main ridge, the Kreuzeck Group, the Reißeck Group, and Lake Millstatt; visibility depends on the weather. A hiking route to the Teuchlspitz passes the Egger’s Au Alm and leads to the natural monument “Materle Larch” at 1,770 m, an ancient larch. This gives you a choice of different starting points for planning: the panorama or a specific natural monument.
The Teuchlspitz Chapel was built at the end of the 18th century. Every year, on the third Saturday in July, a summit mass is held at the Teuchlspitz to ask for a blessing for the weather. Check the date locally before your trip.
Mountain Bike Tour and Hiking Destination
The Teuchl mountain bike tour (RE4) runs from Penk to Teuchl and ends at the Gasthof Alpenheim. The destinations described differ from that of the hiking route to the Materle Larch: the mountain bike tour ends at the inn, while the hiking route leads to the natural monument at 1,770 m. This lets you distinguish between the named tours by whether they involve cycling or hiking, and by their respective destinations.
Church and Mining History
The Teuchl parish church is a small Baroque church on a hillside. Its reconstruction began in 1746, after the previous chapel, dating from 1650, had been demolished; the new building was consecrated in 1758. A different construction period is recorded for the Teuchlspitz Chapel: it was built at the end of the 18th century. The dates for the parish church and the construction period of the summit chapel provide two distinct historical reference points.
Silver mining in Teuchl is recorded in the oldest account book of the Obervellach mining district court, dating from 1480. To this day, the remains of houses, so-called surface workings, and spoil heaps from the former mining operation can be visited. This brings together a dated written record and remains of the former mining activity that can still be seen.
Getting There and Parking
The route to Teuchl follows the B106 Mölltal federal highway. The road branches off near the “Penker Wirt”; from there, the route continues along a paved mountain road about 7 km long. Road conditions can vary by season, so it is a good idea to check conditions before setting off.
There is roadside parking above the Teuchl church. Visitors are asked to park considerately and use space efficiently. Getting there and parking are two practical details to consider when planning your stay.
