Oberwart combines cultural events with historic traces, market days and activities in the City Garden. If you are looking for a hotel in Oberwart, these different highlights can help you tailor your stay to your interests.

Culture and History

The Open House Oberwart (OHO) has been around since 1989 and describes itself as an autonomous arts centre. It is home to several art forms, which often interact with one another. Its programme includes exhibitions, concerts, theatre performances and many other cultural events. As the programme changes over time, check the current events calendar if you plan to visit on a particular date.

Oberwart was first mentioned in a 1327 document issued by King Charles I as “Fels-Eör”. The city’s history also includes border guards who, as military farmers serving the Hungarian king, watched over the border with what is now Styria. Those interested in architecture can find typical arcaded houses in Oberwart, especially in the older residential districts. The Dellacher House is considered an architectural rarity.

The city’s cultural diversity includes German-, Hungarian-, Croatian- and Romani-speaking residents. The Roman Catholic Church, the Protestant Church A.B. and the Reformed Church H.B. have also contributed to this diversity for centuries. Two sculptures add further character to the town hall: the “Border Guard of Oberwart” stands on the steps to the main entrance and is based on the town coat of arms; “Koarl” is on a bench in front of the town hall.

Weekly Market and Farmers’ Market

Oberwart’s weekly market takes place every Wednesday in the area around the main square and City Garden. An ORF report from 2011 gives 1841 as the year of Oberwart’s first weekly market and locates it along the main street. If you would like to visit a market during your trip, you can plan for Wednesday; it is worth checking the date in advance when it falls on a public holiday.

Oberwart’s farmers’ market offers regional delicacies from direct marketers in the City Garden on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. It does not take place on public holidays. The two markets therefore differ both in the day they are held and in what they offer: the weekly market is in the area around the main square and City Garden, while the farmers’ market has set morning hours and does not take place on public holidays.

City Garden and Exercise

The City Garden opened in 2023 as a place for relaxation, gathering and communication for all generations. The Garden of Monuments, with its war memorial and memorial to the victims of National Socialism, is also located in the City Garden. Two water basins with seating and trees frame the square.

If you would like to include some exercise in your stay, the City Garden has a motor skills park with various stations for training motor skills, fitness and coordination. The public playground at Schubertgasse 16–18 offers, among other things, a climbing tower, a swing and a slide; its facilities may change.

The Lebenswart Adventure Trail is a cycling and hiking route for the whole family, where you can discover Oberwart and the Wart region. Oberwart and the surrounding region also have a well-developed network of running, walking and cycling routes. This means you can choose between a named trail and other ways to get active in the city and region during your trip.
