Oberschützen lies in a broad basin in the Willersbach valley. You can get to know the town through several attractions: folk culture, medieval church art, a historic outdoor swimming pool and sports activities. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider what you want your stay to focus on. Museum and church visits offer a different experience from a trip centred on swimming or exercise. The town’s attractions thus provide a practical basis for planning your stay according to your interests.

Folk Culture and Museum in Oberschützen

The House of Folk Culture is a complex comprising an old farmhouse and a modern extension. Since 2003, it has housed three institutions. The Oberschützen Museum presents Pastor Gottlieb August Wimmer and OStR Prof. Franz Simon. The combination offers two distinct starting points for a visit: the architecture of the building and the people featured in the museum. To visit the museum at the House of Folk Culture, register at the office of the Burgenland Folk Song Society or the Heanzenverein office.

Medieval Church Art and Remembrance

Another focus of cultural history is the Medieval Cemetery Church, dedicated to Saint Bartholomew the Apostle. The nave features scenes from the Old and New Testaments dating from around 1280–1290; the choir contains remains of a row of apostles from around 1400. The nave is the main space of a church, while the choir is the area given liturgical prominence. The dedication to Bartholomew adds a religious dimension to the church’s imagery.

The Anschluss Monument offers a different historical perspective: in 1997, it was reinterpreted as a memorial against violence and racism. This development distinguishes this place of remembrance from the medieval church art: here, the focus is on a later reinterpretation, not on the dating of works of art.

Events, Outdoor Pool and Exercise

The Oberschützen Cultural Centre offers venues for conferences, seminars, cultural events and company celebrations. These uses represent different occasions: conferences and seminars are work-related, while cultural events and company celebrations have different focuses. If you are travelling for one of these events, the cultural centre is a practical local point of reference when choosing your destination.

The Oberschützen outdoor swimming pool was built in 1930, has been renovated repeatedly and is the oldest outdoor pool in Burgenland. For the 2026 season, a daily admission fee applies if you do not have a season ticket. The pool’s historical significance and a seasonal admission rule thus come together in planning a visit.

The Running & Walking Arena offers a wide range of sporting leisure activities in Oberschützen. It offers a different way to plan your leisure time than the outdoor pool: the focus here is on sports, while the pool offers seasonal swimming. If you are planning your stay around exercise or swimming, you can consider these local leisure options as different focuses.
