Kohfidisch: Csaterberg, Literature Trail and Wine

Csaterberg: Landscape, Geology and Views

Csaterberg consists of the twin hills Klein Csater and Hoch Csater and forms the southwestern foothills of Eisenberg. The surface rock of Hoch Csater and Klein Csater consists almost entirely of freshwater opal; this deposit is of particular importance, at least on a European scale. Freshwater opal therefore features both in the geological description of the twin hills and in the collection at the Csaterberg Stone Museum.

The Stone Museum displays fossilized wood, freshwater opals and jasper; the exhibits all come from Csaterberg. This creates a direct geological connection between the landscape and the museum pieces. The Marienkapelle (Chapel of Mary) stands at the highest point of Hoch Csater. On clear days, the view from there extends to Eisenberg and far into Hungary. The view is weather-dependent and is one of the special features of this viewpoint.

Hiking and Literature at Csaterberg

There are opportunities for walks in the districts of Kohfidisch, and visitors are invited to hike on Csaterberg. The Literature Trail on Csaterberg follows two hiking routes. Its 42 panels feature short texts by Burgenland authors. At the information point by the old wine press, visitors can listen to audio samples from literary works. The written short texts and audio excerpts complement each other, giving the trail a literary focus.

Another option is the 14.1-kilometre Three Vineyards Circular Trail. It passes through the South Burgenland vineyards of Eisenberg, Deutsch Schützener Berg and Csaterberg, as well as through the municipality of Kohfidisch. The trail opened in September 2025. The route information emphasizes different things: the Three Vineyards Circular Trail has a stated distance, while the Literature Trail focuses on its panels and audio samples. This can help you decide whether a measured circular route or a literary theme matters more to your plans.

Wine and Architectural History

At the Gasthof zum Weinberg, the wine shop is the flagship feature and hub for all activities related to wine. The Three Vineyards Circular Trail also takes in the wine-growing landscape, passing through the vineyards of Eisenberg, Deutsch Schützener Berg and Csaterberg. Kohfidisch therefore offers two different ways to explore wine: the wine shop as a focal point for wine-related activities, and the named vineyards as part of a hiking route.

The history of the castles offers several points of interest, too. Erdödy Castle was built in the 18th century on the remains of a medieval castle. Kohfidisch Castle is a Baroque ensemble dating from the late 18th century and has been owned by the Erdödy family and their descendants since 1582. Kohfidisch Castle was also used as a Buschenschank wine tavern and as a venue for parties and celebrations. This describes the castle’s history; it is not a statement about current events or access.
