Marz lies in the valley of the Marzerbach stream, in a depression of the Wulka Plain that is about 20 kilometers wide. Low, partly wooded hills surround the village; the Rosalia Mountains have a distinct influence on the landscape. Marz is one of the 13 municipalities in Rosalia-Kogelberg Nature Park. For visitors, this geographical setting brings together the plain, wooded hills and the striking mountain range.

Landscape and Routes

The B30 “Koglweg” cycle route is 34 kilometers long and almost entirely paved. At the same time, it has some challenging sections, particularly around Marzer Kogel. Both the route’s length and its sections around the Kogel are therefore important details: the almost entirely paved surface does not diminish the challenge of these stretches.

The R50 cycle route runs along the B50 highway and passes through Marz, among other places. Its route is therefore oriented along the B50; as another cycling route, it complements the Koglweg when planning a ride.

The hiking trail through the Rohrbacher Kogel (Marzer Kogel) and Teichwiesen area begins and ends at the Marz–Rohrbach tennis facility. It is nine kilometers long and takes about three hours. A detour leads to a birdwatching point at Teichwiesen. This specifies the start and end points, route length and approximate duration, as well as an additional opportunity for birdwatching. The Rohrbacher Kogel (Marzer Kogel) Nature Reserve and the Teichwiesen Nature and Landscape Protection Area extend across the cadastral municipalities of Marz, Rohrbach bei Mattersburg and Loipersbach im Burgenland.

Buildings and Customs

The Catholic Parish Church of the Coronation of Mary is a single-nave building, originally Gothic, enclosed by a medieval defensive wall. The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk combines a building with an older religious site: it was built over the Heiligbrunn spring in 1767, which had already been mentioned as an old pilgrimage site in 1699. Its Rococo frescoes are among the most significant in Burgenland.

Another distinctive feature is the wayside column. It dates from the 15th century and is the only Gothic column in all of Burgenland. The Herold Mill adds the history of a mill building to these architectural landmarks: it was built in 1777 and extended in 1843 with a residential and utility wing. The historic interior includes a high, spacious room beneath an open roof structure, work platforms, the former milling equipment and an open fireplace. The two dates mark separate construction phases: the original building was followed by an extension providing residential and utility spaces.

The Robischkirtag is also part of local culture. Robisch young men and women dance at Ambrosius-Salzer-Platz in traditional local dress and dirndls around the decorated Robisch staff. The traditional ribbon dance is the highlight of the fair. Alongside ecclesiastical architecture and mill history, Marz also celebrates a time-honored custom and its dance.
